Bulldogs cruise to 3-0 victory over Cobras

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs hit .337 Tuesday night en route to a 3-0 victory over visiting Coker College in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate won by scores of 25-13, 25-11 and 25-16 to improve to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 2-5 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Sophomore outside hitter Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) hit .500 with eight kills in two sets of action to lead the Wingate attack. Junior middle blocker Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) added eight kills with a .400 hitting percentage in two sets, while freshman Taylor Williams (Keedysville, Md.) had six kills with a .400 hitting percentage. Senior right-side hitter Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) had four kills, six aces and seven digs in two sets, while freshman Oakley Attaway (Belle Isle, Fla.) had four kills in one set, hitting .500. Senior setter Iris Brewer (Cincinnati, Ohio) had 18 assists and eight digs in two sets, while Kori Adams (Ayden, N.C.) contributed 14 assists and seven digs. Freshman libero Kimberly Hovey (Raleigh, N.C.) collected 10 digs.

"Our team really wanted to play well tonight so we could show the progress we are making," head coach Shelton Collier says. "The score differential was a result of us playing extremely well in every aspect of our game and it was great we could use three different lineups and play such a solid match together."

Madison Bingle had six kills to lead the Coker attack. Megan Hardy and Alexis Berles added four kills each, while Christen Bragg compiled nine assists and six digs. Kara Overholt had eight assists for the Cobras, while Rachel Waters added five digs.

A pair of Attaway kills, along with a kill and a block from Rachael Cecka (Plymouth, Wisc.) gave the Bulldogs an 8-3 lead in the opening set. A Bingle block cut the lead to three, but two Saehler kills and a Bludau ace made it 14-7. An Attaway kill pushed the lead to nine, while a kill and a block from Tyler Smith (Aiken, S.C.) made it 20-10. A pair of Bludau kills gave the 'Dogs a 24-12 lead, while a Saehler kill ended the set.

Two early Saehler kills helped Wingate take a 7-1 lead in the second set. Back-to-back kills from Bingle tied it 8-8, but kills from Stumpff, Anna Holmquist (Lincoln, Nebr.) and Hannah Givens (Greensburg, Ky.) put the 'Dogs on top 14-9. The Bulldogs added a 7-0 run to stretch the lead to 21-10. Stumpff had four aces in the flurry. A Saehler kill and two blocks from Smith made it 24-11, while a Smith kill ended the frame.

A pair of Bludau kills, along with a Williams kill gave the Bulldogs a 6-4 lead in the final set. Two more Williams kills stretched the lead to five, while two Stumpff aces and a Williams kill made it 15-6. A Bludau kill gave Wingate an 18-8 advantage. Coker cut the lead to seven on a block from Bingle, but back-to-back Williams kills made it 23-14. A pair of Coker errors ended the match.

The Bulldogs .337 on the match, with 43 kills and 14 errors in 86 attacks. Coker had 21 kills and 17 errors in 92 attacks, hitting .043. Stumpff had six of Wingate's eight aces, while Smith led the 'Dogs with five blocks.

Wingate is back in action Friday, traveling to Carson-Newman for a 7 p.m. match.
