Gabby Caliendo (Orlando, Fla.) scored three minutes into overtime Wednesday night, giving the 16th-ranked Bulldogs a 1-0 victory over visiting Queens University in South Atlantic women's soccer action. Wingate remains undefeated on the year, improving to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. Queens falls to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference.
The teams played to a 0-0 draw in the opening 45 minutes. Wingate held a 5-2 advantage in shots, including a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.
The Royals had a great chance in the opening minute of the second half, but a shot from
Caitlyn Rodrigues was stopped by sophomore goalkeeper
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.).
The Bulldogs countered with a great chance a minute later, but a header from freshman
Sophie Jendrzejczyk (St. Charles, Ill.) was stopped by Queens goalkeeper
Tori Danchak. Wingate had another close call with seven minutes left in regulation when a header from
Caileigh Apicella (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) hit the crossbar.
Wingate ended the match just under four minutes into the first overtime. A pass from sophomore defender
Kaitlyn Fletcher (Jacksonville, N.C.) from the right sideline found Caliendo in the box. The freshman beat the keeper, finding the corner of the net for her second goal of the year to give Wingate the victory.
The Bulldogs outshot Queens 14-3 for the match, with a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. Wingate held the Royals without a shot the final 44 minutes of regulation and all of overtime. Jones had two saves to notch the shutout for Wingate, while Danchak had six saves for the Royals.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Newberry for a 1:30 p.m. start.
