#16 Bulldogs win 3-1 at ninth-ranked Limestone in top 25 showdown

Box Score Gaffney, S.C.----The 16th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs picked up a big region victory Wednesday night, prevailing 3-1 at ninth-ranked Limestone College in NCAA Division II men's soccer action. Wingate remains unbeaten on the year, moving to 7-0-2 overall while the Saints fall to 6-2 on the year. The contest was a rematch of last year's NCAA Southeast regional semifinals.  

"It was a very good second half performance from the entire team," head coach Gary Hamill says. "We scored three top-class goals."

Wingate got on the board early, scoring 4:22 into the contest when All-Region midfielder Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) ripped one past the keeper inside the far post, netting his second goal of the year to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead.

Limestone tied the game in the 15th minute when Gui Machado headed one home off a corner kick from Harry Cooksley.

The match went to halftime tied 1-1, with the Saints holding a 6-3 advantage in shots.

Wingate took the lead with 21 minutes remaining in regulation. Reigning SAC Player of the Week Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) netted his league-best sixth goal of the year, ripping one into the left side of the net to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage. Juul had the assist on the play.

Wingate added an insurance goal less than three minutes later, when All-American forward Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) chipped one over the keeper to make it 3-1. Senior Cameron Burrows (Cary, N.C) had assisted on the goal.

Limestone held an 11-8 advantage in shots on the night, with a slim 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) had six saves for the Bulldogs. Tom Godfrey collected three saves for the Saints. Ander registered a match-high three shots, including two shots on goal.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, continuing a four-match road trip at Lincoln Memorial at 4:30 p.m.
