Wingate, N.C.----The 22nd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs and Flagler College Saints played to a 1-1 draw in NCAA Division II men's soccer action Saturday night at Pride Park. The double-overtime contest featured over 60 fouls and nine yellow cards. The Bulldogs move to 1-0-1 on the year, while the Saints open the season 0-0-1.
Wingate got on the board 18 minutes into the opening half, with 2014 NSCAA All-American
Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) finding the back of the net for the first time this year. Sophomores
Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) and Callum Ross (Newcastle, England) notched assists on the play, as the reigning SAC Player of the Year Machell ripped a line drive over the keeper from 14 yards out to give Wingate a 1-0 lead.
Flagler scored the equalizer 30 minutes into the second half. A free kick from
Eriend Lofsgaard into the box was headed by
Keiron Matthews towards
Marco Warren. The senior's diving effort beat Wingate keeper
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) into the corner of the net, making it 1-1.
That would be all of the scoring on the night. The Bulldogs had the best chance to win the game in the final five seconds of the second overtime. A loose ball in front of the goal was lined by Ander right at Flagler goalkeeper
Lex Craggs, who made the stop but could not secure it. Machell was there for the rebound, but his diving effort sailed just wide left of the post as time expired.
The physical contest featured 62 fouls and nine yellow cards. Wingate was called for 32 fouls, while six Bulldogs received a yellow card. Wingate outshot Flagler 14-9, holding  6-4 edge in shots on goal. Jara had three saves for Wingate, while Craggs collected five saves for the Saints.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday night, hosting UNC Pembroke at 7 p.m. Â
