Georgia College knocks off #16 Wingate on final day of Bobcat Classic

Milledgeville, Ga.----The Georgia College Bobcats won three consecutive sets Saturday evening, shocking 16th-ranked Wingate University in the final match of the 2015 Bobcat Classic. Georgia College won by scores of 21-25, 25-14, 25-21 and 25-21 to improve to 1-2 on the year. The Bulldogs fall to 3-1 overall.

Taylor Svehla had 10 kills, seven digs and six blocks to lead the Georgia College attack. Blake Willoughby added nine kills, while Caroline Long had eight kills and Ebony Powers contributed seven kills to go along with 14 digs. Kayla Brockway handed out 36 assists while piling up 22 digs. Katie Ray added 18 digs for the Bobcats.

"We played an opponent on their home court who really turned it up and played some awesome volleyball tonight," head coach Shelton Collier says. "They deserve credit for a very good win. It is obviously a tough loss for us for many reasons and we hope to bounce back next week."

Senior right-side hitter Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) piled up 19 kills and 15 digs to lead the Wingate attack, adding three blocks and two aces. Junior middle blocker Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) added 13 kills, seven digs and six blocks. Freshman outside hitter Oakley Attaway (Belle Isle, Fla.) contributed six kills and four digs, while junior middle blocker Tyler Smith (Aiken, S.C.) hit .400 with four kills and three blocks. Senior Iris Brewer (Cincinnati, Ohio) had 40 assists and 11 digs, while freshman Kimberly Hovey (Raleigh, N.C.) collected 15 digs.

A kill from Howard gave the Bobcats a 13-11 lead in the first set. A kill from Powers extended the lead to three, but a Stumpff kill and Brewer ace tied the frame at 17. Kills from Stumpff and freshman middle blocker Phoebe Havenaar (Naperville, Ill.) gave the 'Dogs a 19-18 lead. Two Stumpff kills, along with a pair of Saehler blocks made it 23-19. A Saehler kill made it 24-20, while an Attaway kill capped the first frame. The Bulldogs hit .333 in set one.

The Bobcats used a 10-0 run to take a 16-7 lead in set two. Willoughby had a kill and a block in the flurry. Wingate got no closer than eight the rest of the way. A Svehla block made it 24-14, while a Wingate error ended the frame. Wingate hit -.143 in the frame, with six kills and 12 errors.

The Bulldogs used a 5-0 run to take an 8-5 lead in set three, taking advantage of five Georgia College errors. Kills from Saehler and Hovey made it 11-7, but kills from Brockway and Long cut the lead to two. Georgia College used a 3-0 run to take a 16-15 lead, getting a Svehla kill in the flurry. Saehler gave the lead back to Wingate with a kill, but kills from Powers and Long put the Bobcats on top 21-20. An Attaway kill tied it at 21, but kills from Willoughby, Svehla and Long made it 24-21. An ace from Ray capped the set.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth set, with Long capping the spurt with a kill and two blocks. A Saehler kill and Stumpff ace trimmed the lead to two, while two more Saehler kills got Wingate within one at 11-10. A Stumpff kill, followed by two Brewer aces put the 'Dogs on top 14-12. Georgia College countered with a 6-0 run, take an 18-14 lead on a block from Long and Willoughby. Three straight Stumpff kills cut the lead to one at 18-17, but a Svehla kill and two Wingate errors gave Georgia College a 22-18 advantage. Kills from Stumpff and Hannah Givens (Greensburg, Ky.) made it 22-20, but a Svehla kill and Wingate error gave the Bobcats a 24-20 advantage. Svehla ended the match with a kill.

Georgia College hit .166 on the day, with 44 kills and 19 errors in 151 attacks. Wingate hit .097 with 51 kills and 34 errors in 176 attacks. Brewer had a match-high three aces, while Saehler led the way with her six blocks.

Wingate was the tournament champion, compiling a 3-1 overall record. Saehler and Stumpff were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, hosting a tri-match against Erskine and UNC Pembroke. Wingate faces UNCP at 3:30 p.m., then takes on Erskine at 7:30 p.m.
