Anderson, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs picked up their sixth straight conference win and fifth straight victory overall Saturday afternoon, prevailing 73-62 at Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. Wingate moves to 12-4 overall and 8-2 in the SAC, while the Trojans fall to 5-11 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
Junior guard
Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) had 18 points to lead the Wingate attack, knocking down four-of-eight shots from three-point range. Junior forward
Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) added 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals while senior guard
Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) contributed 12 points and three boards. Freshman
Mike Baez (Huntersville, N.C.) had nine points and three rebounds, while sophomore forward
Lee McCall (Indian Land, S.C.) added seven points and seven rebounds.
Tre Fields had 15 points to lead the Anderson attack, going three-for-five from beyond the arc.
Randall Shaw added 13 points, while
Rakish Taylor compiled 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bulldogs used a 7-0 run to take a 17-10 lead nine minutes into the opening half. Cureton had four points in the flurry. A
Marquez Fisher dunk got the Trojans within three, but two Griffin free throws and a Doyle jumper made it 23-14 at the 7:40 mark. Anderson closed the half on a 17-4 run to take a four-point lead. A Fields three put the Trojans on top with 4:51 to go in the half, while a
Lex Davis free throw in the final seconds gave Anderson a 31-27 halftime advantage.
A three-point play from Taylor gave the Trojans a seven-point lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Wingate responded with an 8-0 run to regain the lead.
Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) started the flurry with a three-point play, while Doyle added a triple in the spurt. A Cureton three-point play and Doyle three put the 'Dogs on top by four at the 14:14 mark, but two free throws and a triple from Fields gave Anderson a 49-46 edge. A Shaw layup gave the Trojans a four-point lead at the midway point of the second half.
The Bulldogs responded with a crucial 10-0 run to take a six-point lead. A Doyle layup and two Cureton free throws put Wingate on top, while another Doyle triple made it 59-53 with eight minutes left. Anderson got back within one on a Fisher dunk with 5:48 to go. Wingate closed the game on a 14-4 run. Baez started the flurry with a big three at the 4:10 mark, while a Xavier Griffin layup gave the Bulldogs a six-point cushion. Xavier Griffin made six free throws in the final 36 seconds to secure the Wingate victory.
Wingate shot 40.7 percent from the field, hitting seven-of-20 shots from three-point range (35 percent). The Trojans shot 44.9 percent from the field, knocking down five-of-18 shots from beyond the arc (27.8 percent). The Bulldogs held a 37-34 rebounding advantage to go along with a 15-9 edge in second-chance point. Wingate converted 17 Anderson turnovers into 22 points.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday night, opening a three-game home stand against No. 14 Queens at 8 p.m. in Cuddy Arena.Â
