#25 Bulldogs roll past Brevard for seventh straight sweep

Wingate, N.C.----The 25th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs continued their dominant run Saturday afternoon, sweeping visiting Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate won by scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-23 to improve to 17-0 overall and 9-0 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 3-11 overall and 3-6 in the conference. The Bulldogs have now won all 27 sets played in Cuddy Arena this year. 

Freshman middle blocker Lynnlee Mather (McDonough, Ga.) had 10 kills and three blocks, hitting .409 to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore Taylor Williams (Keedysville, Md.) added 10 kills and two blocks, while senior right-side hitter Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) contributed nine kills and eight digs, hitting .500. Sophomore outside hitter Oakley Attaway (Orlando, Fla.) hit .429 with seven kills, eight digs and three blocks. Freshman setter Rachel Alles (Tinley Park, Ill.) handed out 22 assists, while classmate Treslyn Ortiz (Texas City, Texas) piled up 21 digs. 

"It was a positive sign to see our middle attack have more success in this match, with Lynnlee and Taylor leading us in kills, which is a new dynamic for us," head coach Shelton Collier says. "We were able to play several lineup combinations, which was a plus for us as well."

Hannah Elmore and Rachel Ruble led the Tornados with eight kills each, while Callie Chappell added six kills. Erin Barr collected 26 assists and eight digs, while Aleksandra Vrvilo contributed 16 digs. 

Kills from Saehler and Hannah Givens (Greensburg, Ky.) gave Wingate a 10-5 lead in set one. Kills from Attaway and Williams extended the lead to seven, while kills from Givens and Saehler made it 18-10. A Chappell kill and Barr ace got the Tornados within five, but a kill and a block from Williams gave the 'Dogs a 24-17 advantage. Williams ended the set with a kill. 

Kills from Attaway and Williams gave Wingate an 8-3 advantage in set two. A Saehler kill, followed by a kill and a block from Mather made it 12-5. Kills from Williams and Mather, along with a Givens kill put the Bulldogs on top 24-12. Mather ended the frame with a kill. 

A pair Rachel Lods (Lancaster, Calif.) kills gave Wingate a 9-7 lead in the third set. A pair of Attaway blocks extended the lead to three, but a kill from Elmore tied it at 13. Back-to-back Mather kills, followed by a block from Mather and Attaway gave Wingate a 19-16 lead. Kills from Ruble and Stephanie Lambert helped the Tornados tie it at 20. Saehler and Attaway answered with kills, but an Elmore kill and Wingate error made it 23-23. Saehler responded with a kill, while another Saehler kill ended the match. 

Wingate hit .288 on the day, with 47 kills and 13 errors in 118 attacks. Brevard had 30 kills and 14 errors in 118 attacks, hitting .136. Mather had two of Wingate's three aces, while Mather and Attaway led the 'Dogs with three blocks apiece. 

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday afternoon, hosting defending national champion Wheeling Jesuit at 5 p.m.
