Bulldogs hit season-high .407 in sweep over Royals

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs hit a season-high .407 Friday night, rolling to a 3-0 victory over visiting Queens University in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate won by scores of 25-10, 25-14 and 25-15 to improve to 21-3 overall and 13-2 in the SAC. The Royals fall to 14-5 overall and 11-3 in the conference.

Sophomore outside hitter Oakley Attaway (Orlando, Fla.) had 11 kills and five digs, hitting .417 to lead the Wingate attack. Junior outside hitter Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) added 10 kills with a .667 hitting percentage, while sophomore middle blocker Lynnlee Mather (McDonough, Ga.) hit .727, piling up eight kills in 11 swings while adding six blocks. Senior right-side hitter Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) contributed five kills, seven digs and two blocks, while freshman setter Rachel Alles (Tinley Park, Ill.) registered 19 assists, four digs, four blocks and four kills. Classmate Treslyn Ortiz (Texas City, Texas) collected nine digs for the Bulldogs.

"This was a very impressive performance by our team tonight," head coach Shelton Collier says. "We were aware that the winner of this match would stay in second place and the loser would move down in the standings, so it was an important night for us to have a great match. We are proud we played so well both offensively and defensively."

Meredith Jones had eight kills to lead the Queens attack, but also had nine errors, hitting -.036. Taylor Henry had six kills for the Royals, while Rebecca Cochran added four kills. Sydney Kunz handed out 20 assists, while Cochran led Queens with eight digs.

Wingate jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the opening set, using runs of 6-0, 5-0 and 4-0. Saehler had a kill and a block in the first spurt, while Mather had two kills in the second flurry. Mather had a kill and a block to put the 'Dogs on top 17-3. Kills from Bludau and Saehler made it 21-7, while a kill and a block from Attaway put Wingate on top 24-9. Mather ended the set with a kill. The Bulldogs hit .591 in the opening frame, with 13 kills and no errors in 22 swings. Queens had eight kills and nine errors, hitting -.032.

Two Attaway kills and a Mather kill capped a 6-0 run that gave Wingate a 10-4 lead in set two. An Attaway kill and Rachel Lods (Lancaster, Calif.) ace made it 15-8, while Bludau added a kill to stretch the advantage to eight at 17-9. A block from Jones got Queens within six at 17-11, but Wingate countered with a 6-0 run to take a 12-point lead. Bludau and Alles started the flurry with kills, while a kill and a block from Taylor Williams (Keedysville, Md.) ended the spurt. A kill from Skylar Ricard (Greensboro, N.C.) made it 24-14, while a Queens error ended the frame. Wingate hit .333 in set two, while Queens had seven kills and nine errors, hitting -.061.

Back-to-back kills from Mather and Alles gave Wingate a 6-1 lead in the third set, but two kills from Jessica Raines tied the set at 12. The Bulldogs responded with a 6-0 run, getting two kills and a block from Alles to take an 18-12 lead. A Mather kill and Attaway ace gave the 'Dogs a 22-14 advantage, while kills from Mather and Bludau made it 24-15. A Queens error ended the match. Wingate hit .353 in the final set, with 16 kills and four errors.

The Bulldogs had 42 kills and seven errors in 86 swings on the night to register their season-high .407 hitting percentage. Queens ended the evening with 24 kills and 24 errors in 97 attacks, hitting .000. Mather's six blocks were a match high, while Alles finished with four blocks. Saehler had two of Wingate's seven aces on the night.

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting Catawba at 2 p.m.
