Elon, N.C.----Elon University junior guard
Shay Burnett (Graham, N.C.) had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Phoenix to a 74-42 women's basketball exhibition victory over Wingate University Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium. Wingate sophomore forward
Zasha Barrett (Monroe, N.C.) led the Bulldogs with eight points as 10 Bulldogs found the scoring column.
"This was a great learning experience for us," Wingate head women's basketball coach
Ann Hancock says. "Elon is very good. They have experience, athleticism and height. We were tested in every facet."Â
"Zasha Barrett came off the bench to provide a spark," Hancock says. "(Sophomore forward/guard)
Danasia Witherspoon (Hickory, N.C.) battled incredibly inside with their post players. She is an amazing defender for her size. (Senior)
Kristina Rumplasch (Mount Airy, N.C.) did a great job getting to the foul line." Â
Â
Elon never trailed, shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first quarter (10-of-20) to take a 23-7 lead after the opening frame. Elon junior center
Malaya Johnson (Mount Airy, N.C.) had 11 points, while senior forward
Jenifer Rhodes (North Charleston, S.C.) contributed 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Â
The Bulldogs made only two field goals in 16 first-quarter tries (12.5 percent). The defending South Atlantic Conference tournament champions rallied in the second quarter, nailing 36.4 percent of their tries (four-of-11) as Elon went to the halftime locker room with a 38-23 advantage.
"In order to compete with their talent, we have to execute fundamental things on every play," Hancock says. "We ran our offense well, but their size bothered us while we tried to finish around the basket. Our rebounding and boxing out will have to improve. Overall, I was pleased with our effort. We will take what we learned and get ready for season."
