Bulldogs pile up 17 runs in doubleheader sweep over Augusta

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs picked up their second consecutive doubleheader sweep Wednesday afternoon, cruising past Augusta University in NCAA Division II softball action. Wingate won the first game 8-0 in five innings, while prevailing 9-2 in the second game, improving to 4-2 overall. The Jaguars fall to 0-8 on the season.

Game One: Wingate 8, Augusta 0 (5 innings)

Freshman right-hander Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) tossed a two-hit shutout in the opening game. Senior Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) had a double, homer and three RBI to lead the offense, while classmate Shannen Adams (Ayden, N.C.) was three-for-three with two RBI and a run scored. Freshman Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) went two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored, while freshman Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) added an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs.

Wingate jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second. Sapp's RBI single plated the first run, while a passed ball made it 2-0. Adams added an RBI single, while an RBI double from Helms made it 4-0.

A two-out RBI single from Wells in the third put the 'Dogs on top by five. The Bulldogs struck again in the fourth when Helms connected on her first homer of the season, a two-run shot to right center to make it 7-0.

Wingate finished the game in the fifth. An error and groundout put a runner on second with one out. Adams ended the game with her second RBI single of the day, making it 8-0.

Weidner got the win, moving to 1-2. She struck out six in five innings of work, taking a no-hitter into the fourth while notching her first collegiate win and shutout. Paige Deschaine took the loss, falling to 0-4. She allowed seven runs on 11 hits in three innings, striking out one without walking a batter.

Game Two: Wingate 9, Augusta 2

Junior Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) was three-for-four with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Bulldogs in game two. Helms went three-for-three with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, while senior Emily Usiak (Matthews, N.C.) had two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Sapp added a double, RBI and run scored for the Bulldogs.

Wingate jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Helms started the frame with a single, then scored on Usiak's RBI double. Doran followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the second inning. A Wells single, followed by an Augusta error put two on for Helms, who lined a two-run triple to right center to give the 'Dogs a 4-0 advantage.

Wingate posted two more runs in the third to go on top by six. Doran led off the frame with a single, followed by singles from Kyra Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Jordan Wilson (Gastonia, N.C.) to load the bases. A double play allowed the first run to score, while Sapp's RBI double to right center gave the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead.

The Jaguars got on the board in the fourth. Back-to-back singles started the inning, while Ashley Benton's two-run single made it 6-2.

Wingate answered with three runs in the sixth. Helms got it started with a one-out single, then scored on Usiak's RBI double to left center. Doran followed with a towering two-run homer to left, her first of the season to make it 9-2.

Senior right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) got the win, moving to 3-0 on the year. She allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out four and walking two. Haley Birkle took the loss, falling to 0-3. She allowed nine runs on 12 hits in six innings, striking out four and walking one.

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting a doubleheader against Limestone at 1 p.m.
