Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs picked up their second straight doubleheader sweep, taking a pair from visiting Concord University in NCAA Division II baseball action Saturday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won the opener 6-1, while adding a 12-6 victory in game two to improve to 7-5 overall. The Mountain Lions fall to 0-5 on the season.
Game One: Wingate 6, Concord 1Junior outfielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) had two hits and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack, while sophomore
Brett Branton (Athens, Ga.) and freshman
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) each added two hits and two RBI. Redshirt freshman
Kemper Patton (Sumter, S.C.) added a homer for the Bulldogs, while junior
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) and freshman
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) each contributed a hit and an RBI.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Freshman
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) got things started with a one-out double, then scored on an RBI single from Barnette. Wingate added two runs in the second. Branton singled, then scored on Llewellyn's RBI double. An RBI single from Billings made it 3-1.
Concord got on the board in the top of the third on an
Andy Szamski RBI single.
Wingate answered with two runs in the fourth. A Branton single and Llewellyn double put runners on second and third, while a sacrifice fly from Daniel plated Branton. Llewellyn scored on a Billings RBI double, giving the 'Dogs a 5-1 lead. Wingate added a run in the fifth when Patton connected on his first career homer, a solo shot to right on the first pitch he saw, giving the Bulldogs a five-run advantage.
That would be plenty for the Wingate pitching staff. Senior left-hander
Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) tossed six solid innings, allowing just one run on six hits, striking out five to move to 2-1 on the year. Sophomore
Hunter Hamilton (Troy, N.C.) added two innings of one-hit relief, striking out two while senior right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) allowed just one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.
Chris Kelly took the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed six runs on 12 hits in eight innings, striking out nine without walking a batter.
Game Two: Wingate 12, Concord 6Billings went four-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense. Freshmen
Logan Pingley (Madison Heights, Va.) and
Bailey Connell (Waxhaw, N.C.) drove in two runs each. Little and classmate
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) each had three hits, an RBI and two runs scored while senior
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Concord took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when
Andrew Seigel led off the game with a triple, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Szamski.
Wingate answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Singles from Billings, Little and Krebs put the first three runners on base, while a pair of Concord errors put the 'Dogs on top.
The Bulldogs plated three runs in the third to take a four-run lead. Turgeon plated the first run with an RBI double, while a two-out, two-run single from Connell made it 5-1.
Wingate plated seven runs in the fourth to take an 11-run lead. A Krebs sacrifice fly started the scoring, while Barnette followed with an RBI double. Pingley added a two-run double, while Branton followed with an RBI double to make it 10-1. A Billings RBI single and Little RBI double gave the Bulldogs a 12-1 advantage.
Szamski's RBI single in the fifth made it 12-2. The Mountain Lions scored four times in the sixth to get within six.
Chad Frazier started the scoring with a two-run single, while a Seigel RBI single and
Brad Sullivan RBI groundout made it 12-6.
Sophomore left-hander
Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-1. He allowed two runs on five hits in five innings, striking out three and walking one. Junior right-hander
Dusty Ayscue (Louisburg, N.C.) added 1 2/3 shutout innings in relief, striking out one without allowing a hit.
Troy Beckner took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in three innings, falling to 0-2.
The Bulldogs and Mountain Lions are back in action Sunday, wrapping up a three-game series at 1 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium.
