Strong second half leads #16 Belmont Abbey to 13-9 win over Wingate

Belmont, N.C.----Belmont Abbey College sophomores Callum Tanner (Victoria, B.C.), Adam Wiedemann (Caledon East, Ontario) and MJ Miller (New Bern, N.C.) led the offensive charge scoring three goals each, lifting the 16th-ranked Crusaders past Wingate University by a final score of 13-9 in NCAA men's lacrosse action at Alumni Field. The BAC Crusaders are 3-1 overall.
 
For Wingate (0-3 overall), sophomore attack Jeremy Sullivan (Crofton, Md.) had three goals. Bulldog freshman midfielder Wyatt Weiseman (Jensen Beach, Fla.) had two tallies for the visitors. The Bulldogs have played three games in a row against nationally-ranked opponents. Wingate hosts number 12 the University of Mount Olive Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.

The Crusaders struck first as they began the contest with back-to-back goals to take a 2-0 lead with 11:39 to go in the first quarter on a goal from senior attack Connor Sellars (Brampton, Ontario, Canada). Belmont Abbey led the game 4-2 with 7:39 left in the first quarter until the Bulldogs answered with two consecutive goals to tie the contest at 4-4 on a goal from freshman midfielder Conor Gronbach (Cary, N.C.).
 
The game remained tied at 4-4 with 3:37 remaining in the second quarter until a goal from Weiseman gave Wingate a 5-4 lead with 3:33 remaining in the second. The Abbey responded with another goal to tie the contest up at 5-5 going into the halftime break.
 
The Bulldogs had the 7-6 advantage with 9:20 in the third quarter on a score from freshman attack Alex Llerandi (Marietta, Ga.). Belmont Abbey answered with six consecutive goals to give the Crusaders a 12-7 lead with 11:24 to play in the fourth quarter.
 
Wingate junior goalkeeper and reigning SAC Defensive Player of the Week Jacob Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) posted 13 saves on the afternoon, encoring a 16-save performance last game against number 11 Mercyhurst University. Belmont Abbey sophomore goalkeeper Harley Whitham (Elk Grove, Calif.) also recorded 13 total saves. Both goalies went the distance Saturday.
 
The Wingate University men's lacrosse team will be back in action Wednesday with number 12 Mount Olive visiting the Graham Gill Field at the Irwin Belk Track Complex. The Belmont Abbey College Crusaders will also be in action at home on Wednesday, when they face the Brevard College Tornadoes at 4 p.m.
