Valdosta, Ga.----The Wingate University Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead Sunday afternoon, then held on for a 6-4 victory at Valdosta State University in NCAA Division II baseball action. Wingate improves to 2-2 overall, while the Blazers fall to 3-2 on the year.
Senior designated hitter
Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) was three-for-five with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Junior infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) added a double and two runs scored, while junior outfielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) had a double, triple and a run scored for the Bulldogs. Senior
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) and freshman
David Nash (Monroe, N.C.) each drove in a run for Wingate.
Marcus Sigmon drove in a pair of runs for Valdosta State.
Dalton Duty was three-for-three with an RBI and a run scored, while
Cliff Bryant also drove in a run for the Blazers.
Billings led off the game with a triple, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Barnette.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the third. A hit batsman, walk and passed ball put runners on second and third for Krebs, who delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Simmons followed with an RBI single, while a bases-loaded walk from Nash made it 4-0.
Wingate scored two more runs in the fourth to push the lead to six. Freshman
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) led off the frame with a single, then moved to third on Barnette's double. A Simmons RBI single plated Little, while freshman
Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) drove home Barnette to make it 6-0.
VSU got on the board in the fifth on an RBI double from Duty.
The Blazers scored three times in the ninth to make the final margin 6-4. A single, walk and error loaded the bases, while Sigmon drove home a pair of runs with a groundout. Bryant's double got the Blazers within two, but the Bulldogs would not allow another run, hanging on for the victory.
Junior right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-0. He allowed a run on four hits in five innings, striking out four and walking three.
Kyle Andre took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings, falling to 0-1.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting Belmont Abbey at 3 p.m.Â
