Laskey’s big day leads Wingate to doubleheader split at #8 Georgia College

Milledgeville, Ga.----After falling 11-0 in game one of an NCAA Division II softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon, the Wingate University Bulldogs rebounded with an 11-6 victory over eighth-ranked Georgia College. Wingate moves to 13-5 on the season, with two wins over top-15 teams including last week's win over defending national champion North Georgia. The Bobcats are now 23-5 overall.

Game One: #8 Georgia College 11, Wingate 0 (5 innings)

Baylee Hall had a triple, homer and six RBI to lead the Georgia College attack. Kristen Brooks added two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while Lacey Najafi and Danielle Bernstein each contributed an RBI and a run scored for the Bobcats.

Freshman outfielder Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) was two-for-two to lead the Wingate offense. Seniors Jordan Wilson (Gastonia, N.C.) and Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) each added a hit for the Bulldogs.

Hall's two-run single gave Georgia College a 2-0 lead in the second. The Bobcats plated six runs in the third, highlighted by Hall's grand slam.

Najafi's RBI triple in the fourth made it 9-0, while a Wingate error and Brooks RBI single put Georgia College on top by 11.

Marisa Boyette got the win, moving to 9-2. She tossed a five-inning shutout, striking out four and walking four while allowing four hits. Senior right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 8-3. She allowed eight runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings, striking out one and walking one.

Game Two: Wingate 11, #8 Georgia College 6

Laskey went three-for-four with two homers and five RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outfielder Shannen Adams (Ayden, N.C.) added two RBI and a run scored, while junior outfielder Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) had two hits and two runs scored. Wilson, Sapp and senior Emily Usiak (Matthews, N.C.) each contributed an RBI for the Bulldogs.

Najafi and Faith Flanders each drove in two runs for the Bobcats in game two, while Abby LeRoy and Julia Tindall added an RBI apiece for Georgia College.

Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) led off the game with a triple, then scored on Laskey's RBI groundout.

The Bulldogs piled up six runs in the second to make it 7-0. Adams plated the first two runs with a two-run single, while a Georgia College error made it 4-0. Laskey delivered the big blow of the frame, a three-run homer to put the 'Dogs on top by seven.

A Flanders RBI single in the third, followed by Najafi's two-run single got the Bobcats within four.

Wingate responded with three runs in the top of the fourth. Usiak drove home the first run with an RBI double, while Wilson's RBI single made it 9-3. Sapp added an RBI single to push the Wingate lead back to seven.

Georgia College got a run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout from Tindall.

Laskey connected on her second homer of the day and third of the week in the seventh, a solo shot to make it 10-4.

The Bobcats scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, with a Flanders RBI double and LeRoy sacrifice fly making the final margin 10-6.

Freshman right-hander Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) got the win, moving to 7-2 on the season. She allowed five earned runs on nine hits in seven innings of work, striking out three and walking two. Carly Lewis took the loss, falling to 11-3. She allowed seven runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting a doubleheader against Lincoln Memorial at 1 p.m. in the SAC opener.
