Andrews’ career-high seven goals helps Wingate defeat Lees-McRae 13-8

Banner Elk, N.C.----Wingate University junior midfielder Brittany Andrews (Bel Air, Md.) posted a career-high seven goals to lead the Bulldogs to a 13-8 NCAA Division II women's lacrosse victory over Lees-McRae College Wednesday night at Tate Field. Bulldog junior midfielder Paulena Dempsey (Jarrettsville, Md.) added five goals and three assists.
 
Wingate improves to 4-3 overall, while Lees-McRae falls to 2-5 overall. The Bulldogs return to South Atlantic Conference play Saturday, hosting Lincoln Memorial University at Graham Gill Field. Game time is 4 p.m. Lees-McRae visits Conference Carolinas foe Converse College Thursday, March 24.
 
The Bulldogs sprinted to a 6-1 lead and never looked back. Andrews had three goals in the spurt, while Dempsey added two and senior midfielder and team captain Emily Nosek (Bel Air, Md.) scored one. The Bobcats closed the half on a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 7-5 at intermission. Sophomore attack Peyton LeCompte (Carolina Beach, N.C.) and senior attack Jenah Tracy (Naples, Fla.) had one goal and one assist each in the flurry.
 
Lees-McRae would get no closer than the halftime deficit in the second half. Andrews had four of her seven goals after intermission, including three in the final 18:11 as Wingate pulled away. Freshman attack Constance Madden (Stuart, Fla.) had all three of the Bobcats' second-half scores. Madden led the Lees-McRae offense with three goals and two assists Wednesday.
 
Both goalkeepers played 60 minutes Wednesday. Wingate freshman goalie Arion Pierre (Haymarket, Va.) earned her fourth win of the season. She allowed eight goals and collected 10 saves. Lees-McRae senior goalkeeper Mia Emmerson (Orlando, Fla.) matched Pierre with 10 saves. She surrendered 13 goals. The Bulldogs outshot the Bobcats 30-25.
