Newberry, S.C.----The Newberry College Wolves swept a doubleheader of visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon. The Wolves won the first game 17-6, while finishing off the sweep with a 5-3 victory in game two. Newberry improves to 24-9-1 overall and 7-5 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 19-14 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
Game One: Newberry 17, Wingate 6Daymon Totherow was four-for-five with three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Newberry offense, while
Jeff Sneed had three hits, three RBI and two run scored.
Jacob Bass and
Robert Kosch each added two RBI and a run scored, while
Michael Gonzalez contributed three hits, an RBI and three runs scored for the Wolves.
Sophomore
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) was two-for-two with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate offense. Seniors
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) and
Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.), along with junior
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) and freshman
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) each added an RBI for the Bulldogs.
Junior
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) led off the game with a double, then scored on an RBI double from Krebs to give Wingate a 1-0 lead in the first.
Newberry scored five times in the third, getting a Gonzalez RBI triple and
Trejon Smith RBI single to go along with a pair of Wingate errors to take a 5-1 lead.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to two in the sixth. Brown started things with a one-out single, while a
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) single put two on for Simmons, who plated Brown with an RBI single. Turgeon followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3.
An RBI single from Bass in the bottom of the sixth put the Wolves on top by three. Wingate answered with three runs in the seventh to tie it. Barnette drove home the first run with an RBI single, while Brown's two-run homer made it 6-6.
The Wolves responded by scoring 11 times in the final two innings. RBI singles from Sneed, Tutherow and
Danton Hyman gave Newberry a 9-6 lead in the seventh. The Wolves scored eight times in the eighth to go on top 17-6. Kosch got it started with a two-run single, while Totherow added a two-run triple in the frame.
Marshall Rentz got the win, moving to 1-0. He tossed 2 2/3 shutout innings in relief, striking out one without allowing a hit. Senior right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) took the loss, falling to 3-1. He allowed four runs on seven hits in four innings of work, striking out two.
Game Two: Newberry 5, Wingate 3Gonzalez was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Newberry attack in game two. Sneed also had two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Wolves, while Hyman contributed a pair of hits and an RBI. Bass and
Derek Olenchuk each scored a run and drove in a run.
Brown went one-for-one with a double and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Little also drove in a run, while Barnette contributed a pair of hits and a run scored.
Krebs drew a two-out walk in the third, then moved to second on a Barnette single. Brown's two-run double put the 'Dogs on top 2-0.
Newberry tied it in the bottom of the frame, with Bass scoring the first run on a wild pitch, while a Gonzalez RBI single made it 2-2. An RBI groundout from Bass in the fourth gave the Wolves a 3-2 lead.
The Bulldogs tied it in the fifth. Billings led off the frame with a single, then scored on an RBI single from Little to make it 3-3.
The Wolves answered with two in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead. Olenchuk's RBI single put Newberry on top, while Hyman's RBI double made the final margin 5-3.
Zack Kelly got the win, moving to 5-2. He allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings of work, striking out two and walking three. Sophomore right-hander
Hunter Morgan (Summerfield, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-2. He allowed two runs on five hits in two innings of work, striking out one.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting UNC Pembroke at 6 p.m.
