#15 Queens takes 19-8 SAC victory over Wingate

Wingate, N.C.--- Queens University of Charlotte senior attack Maggie Masters (Annapolis, Md.) and junior attack Abigail Paulus (Pickerington, Ohio) netted four goals each as the 15th- ranked Royals remain undefeated in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse play with a 19-8 victory over Wingate University on Graham Gill Field at the Irwin Belk Track Complex. Queens improves to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. Wingate is now 7-4 and 2-2 in SAC competition.

The Royals jumped out to the early lead and never looked back on four unanswered goals to make it a 4-0 contest with 24:32 in the first half. Two of those tallies were scored by junior midfielder Alexandra Bruder (Ocean City, Md.) who tied for second on the team total list with three goals on the afternoon.

Wingate ended the Queens consecutive goal streak with back-to-back scores to cut the lead in half at 4-2 with 15:53 in the first half of play. The two goals were netted by junior midfielder Brittany Andrews (Bel Air, Md.) and junior midfielder Paulena Dempsey (Jarrettsville, Md.). The reigning SAC Offensive Player of the Week, Dempsey led the Bulldogs in offense with three tallies in the contest. She now has 38 goals on the season.

Queens would answer the consecutive goals by Wingate with a run of seven unanswered scores to gain an 11-2 advantage with 3:16 remaining in the first half. The Royals would maintain the 11-2 lead going into the halftime break.

The Bulldogs began the second half of play with three straight scores to cut the deficit to 11-5 with 25:25 remaining in the second half. QU added an insurance goal from junior midfielder Kelly Dowd (Stony Point, N.Y.) to make it a 12-5 contest with 23:48 in the second half. The 'Dogs then attempted the comeback with back-to-back tallies to inch the margin closer to 12-7 with 20:50 left in the second half.  Queens would immediately answer with a streak of six unanswered insurance goals to extend the lead to 18-7 and pull away for the win.

Wingate freshman goalkeeper Arion Pierre (Haymarket, Va.) posted 13 saves on the afternoon. She went the distance and took the loss. Queens junior goalie Christine Wiese (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) recorded three saves and picked up the win. She also went the distance Saturday.

The Wingate University women's lacrosse team will be back in action Saturday when they host SAC opponent the Catawba College Indians for a noon draw control. The Queens University of Charlotte Royals will be back in action on Saturday as well when they take on the Tusculum College Pioneers for a home SAC contest. First draw control is slated for 12 noon.
