Donahue tosses 3-hit shutout as ‘Dogs finish off sweep against Bloomsburg

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs wrapped up a three-game sweep Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 10-0 victory over Bloomsburg University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate improves to 12-7 overall, while the Huskies fall to 6-5 on the season.

Freshman outfielder Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) went two-for-three with three RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Junior infielder Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) was three-for-five with a double and two RBI, while senior outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) went two-for-five with an RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore designated hitter Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) added an RBI and a run scored, while All-American Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) stole five bases, scoring three runs.

Billings was hit by a pitch to start the first, then stole second and scored on a Barnette RBI single. Freshman Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) started a two-out rally in the third with a double, then scored on a Krebs RBI single. Barnette followed with an RBI double to make it 3-0.

Freshman Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) lined a one-out double to left in the fourth, then scored on a Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) RBI single to make it 4-0.

The Bulldogs scored two more in the fifth. Krebs started the frame with a double, then scored on Brown's RBI double. Turgeon added a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.

Billings reached on a one-out single in the sixth, then stole second and third. He would then steal home to push the lead to seven. Brown scored on a Bailey Connell (Waxhaw, N.C.) RBI single in the seventh to make it 8-0.

The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the eighth. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases for Turgeon, who delivered with a two-run single to right to make it 10-0.

That was plenty for junior right-hander Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.), who moved to 3-1 with the complete game victory. He allowed just three singles in nine innings, striking out seven while throwing 110 pitches. After allowing a one-out single in the second, Donahue did not allow another hit until a one-out single in the seventh. He also induced three Bloomsburg double plays on the day. Mike Warren took the loss, falling to 2-1. He allowed eight runs on 15 hits in seven innings, striking out three without walking a batter.

The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, traveling to UNC Pembroke for a 3 p.m. start.
