Bulldogs go 1-1 on final day in Georgia

Dahlonega, Ga.----The Wingate University Bulldogs picked up a 6-1 victory over UVA-Wise Sunday morning, while dropping a 3-1 decision against No. 13 North Georgia on the final day of the Captain D's Surf and Turf Classic. Wingate caps a 3-1 weekend, moving to 12-4 on the season.

Senior infielder Emily Usiak (Matthews, N.C.) went four-for-four with two doubles, a homer and four RBI to lead the offense. Senior infielder Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) added a double and a run scored, while freshman Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) and senior Shannen Adams (Ayden, N.C.) each contributed a pair of hits for the Bulldogs, with Sapp adding an RBI.

Wingate got on the board in the first. Junior outfielder Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) drew a one-out walk, then scored on Usiak's RBI double to center.

UVA-Wise answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Shannon Bennett scored on a Delany Turner RBI single.

The Bulldogs regained the lead with two runs in the third. Helms got it started with a one-out double, then scored on an error. Usiak followed with an RBI double down the right field line to make it 3-1.

Usiak connected on her second homer of the season in the seventh, a two-run shot to left center to make it 5-1. Senior Jordan Wilson (Gastonia, N.C.) followed with a single, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Sapp to give the 'Dogs a five-run lead.  

Freshman right-hander Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) got the win, moving to 4-2. She allowed a run on five hits in seven innings, tying her career high with 11 strikeouts while walking just one. Taylor Brandts took the loss, allowing six runs on 12 hits in seven innings, striking out two and walking two.

No. 13 North Georgia 3, Wingate 1

The defending national champion Nighthawks avenged Saturday's 4-1 loss with a 3-1 victory Sunday. Ansley Phillips was two-for-three with a pair of RBI to lead the UNG offense, while Stephanie Hartness added an RBI.

Wilson had a double and an RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior catcher Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) added two hits and a run scored for the Bulldogs.

An RBI single from Phillips gave North Georgia a 1-0 lead in the second. Wingate answered in the third. Laskey reached on a one-out single, then scored on Wilson's RBI double to center to make it 2-1.

North Georgia regained the lead in the fifth on an RBI double from Hartness. Phillips added an RBI single in the sixth to make the final margin 3-1.

Reigning National Player of the Year Courtney Poole got the win, moving to 20-1, with the one loss coming Saturday against Wingate. She gave up a run on six hits in seven innings, striking out six. Senior right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 8-2. She allowed three runs on just four hits in seven innings, striking out one and walking one.

Wingate is back in action Thursday, hosting a doubleheader against Limestone at 1 p.m.
