Sullivan leads Wingate to 15-12 SAC victory at Brevard

Brevard, N.C.----Wingate sophomore attack Jeremy Sullivan (Crofton, Md.) netted six goals to lead the offense as the Bulldogs claim their sixth consecutive victory with a 15-12 South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse decision over the Brevard College Tornados at the Brevard Lacrosse Field. Wingate improves to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in the SAC. Brevard is now 2-12 and 0-7 in SAC play.
 
The Tornadoes jumped out to the early 2-0 lead at the 8:52 mark in the first quarter on back-to-back scores from junior attack Ryan Taylor (Mill Bay, B.C.). Taylor totaled four goals on the afternoon to finish first on the BC team total list.
 
The 'Dogs ended the streak of consecutive tallies on a score from freshman midfielder Daniel Godwin (Greensboro, N.C.). BC then answered with back-to-back goals to gain a 4-1 advantage with 13 seconds remaining in the first quarter of play.
 
BC maintained a 5-2 lead with 14:45 in the second quarter until two straight tallies from Sullivan cut the contest down to a one-goal margin at 5-4. The Tornados then added another score to make it a 6-4 game with 9:25 to go in the second quarter.
 
Wingate soon commenced a run of three unanswered scores to close out the first half of play and take its first lead of the contest at the 2:50 mark in the second quarter. The 'Dogs maintained the 7-6 lead going into the halftime break.
 
The Bulldogs struck first to begin the second half on a tally from freshman attack Kenan Reed (Winston Salem, N.C.), stretching the WU lead out to 8-6 with 13:33 left in the third quarter. The Reed tally extended the Wingate streak to four consecutive scores. The Tornadoes ended the WU run with an unassisted score from freshman attack Jackson McKaig (Gainesville, Fla.) to make it an 8-7 contest with 12:01 to go in the third quarter.
 
Wingate pushed its lead to 10-7 at the 10:34 mark in the third quarter on back-to-back tallies from Sullivan. BC would fight back to gain a one-score advantage at 11-10 with 1:33 remaining in the third.
 
The Bulldogs came back again to take the 12-11 lead on Reed's second goal of the afternoon (and sixth of the season), along with a score from freshman midfielder Robbie Williams (Pequannock, N.J.) with 11 seconds left in the third quarter.
 
Brevard would knot the contest up at 12-12 with 8:41 remaining in the fourth quarter on Taylor's fourth goal on the afternoon. Daniel Godwin then netted the game-winning tally for the Bulldogs to take the 13-12 lead at the 7:46 mark in the fourth quarter. Wingate then added consecutive insurance tallies from junior midfielder Seth Grimwood (Huntingtown, Md.) to seal the deal and gain a 15-12 advantage with 1:17 remaining in the contest. Grimwood now totals 11 goals in his junior campaign.
 
Wingate junior goalkeeper Jacob Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) played a total of 30 minutes on Saturday and posted two saves. He was replaced by junior goalie Michael Connor (Stockport, England), who played for the duration of the second half and picked up his first win of the season. Brevard freshman goalkeeper Colton Girard (Gainesville, Fla.) recorded 10 saves and took the loss. He went the distance Saturday.
 
The Wingate University men's lacrosse team is back in action Saturday, April 23, for Senior Day in a SAC match-up against the Tusculum College Pioneers. First face-off at Wingate's Graham Gill Field is slated 4 p.m. The Brevard College Tornadoes are back in action on Tuesday for a SAC road meeting with the Catawba College Indians at 5 p.m.
