Houser fires a pair of Senior Day shutouts as ‘Dogs sweep Trojans

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) tossed 13 shutout innings Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep against visiting Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference softball action. Wingate won the first game 1-0, while rolling to an 8-0 win in six innings in game two. The Bulldogs move to 30-14 overall and 15-7 in the SAC, while Anderson falls to 29-19 overall and 9-13 in the conference.

Game One: Wingate 1, Anderson 0

Sophomore outfielder Morgan Hendrix (Mocksville, N.C.) was one-for-three with an RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outfielder Shannen Adams (Ayden, N.C.) went two-for-two with a double, while senior infielder Emily Usiak (Matthews, N.C.) scored a run for the Bulldogs.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. Usiak drew a one-out walk, then moved to second on a single from Adams and third on a Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) fielder's choice. Hendrix then delivered a two-out RBI single to make it 1-0.

That would be enough for Houser. The senior allowed just three singles on the day, striking out six and walking five. Anderson got two on via a walk and single in the third, but Houser got out of the jam with a strikeout. A pair of walks put two on for the Trojans in the fifth, but Houser induced an inning-ending foulout. A walk and single put two on with one out for Anderson in the top of the sixth, but a groundout and strikeout ended the threat. Houser would work a 1-2-3 seventh to notch the shutout.

Houser improved to 18-11 on the year, notching her fifth shutout and 20th complete game of the season. Augie Pena took the loss, falling to 11-5. She allowed a run on five hits in six innings, striking out four and walking two.

Game Two: Wingate 8, Anderson 0 (6 innings)

Junior infielder Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) blasted a pair of homers to lead the Wingate attack in game two, driving in three runs. Usiak also homered in game two, driving in two runs and scoring twice, while freshman outfielder Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) added two hits and a run scored. Helms drove in a run for the Bulldogs, while senior Jordan Wilson (Gastonia, N.C.) and junior Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) each added a hit and a run scored.

After three scoreless innings, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Doran led off the frame with her eighth homer of the year, a solo shot to center to get Wingate on the board. Wilson followed with a single, while Usiak connected on her fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot to left to push the lead to three.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fifth. Senior catcher Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) drew a two-out walk, then scored when Doran connected on her second homer in as many innings, a two-run shot to left to make it 5-0. Doran homered twice in the second game of a doubleheader for the second straight Saturday. Last week she had a grand slam and three-run homer in back-to-back innings at Carson-Newman, driving in a career-high seven runs.

Wingate plated three more runs in the sixth to end the game. McLaurin started the frame with a double to center, then scored on an error. Singles from Sapp and Adams then loaded the bases for Helms, who drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-0. Junior outfielder Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) followed with an RBI groundout, plating the eighth run of the game to finish off the win.

Houser got her second win of the day, 19th of the year and 88th of her career, tossing six shutout innings allowing just two hits. The three-time All-SAC selection now has 109 career complete games and 32 shutouts. Wingate's all-time wins leader is now second in SAC history in complete games, third in shutouts and fifth in innings pitched. Randee Bettis took the loss, falling to 6-7. She allowed three runs on four hits in four innings of work.

Next up for Wingate is the SAC Tournament. The Bulldogs won 13 of their final 15 SAC games to finish third in the league standings. The tournament starts Thursday, April 28. Every game will take place in Hartsville, S.C.
