Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) had a double, homer and five RBI to lead the Bulldogs to an 11-7 victory over visiting Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. With the victory, Wingate qualifies for the SAC tournament later this week in Kodak, Tenn.
Wingate completes the 2016 regular season 28-20 overall and 12-12 in the SAC. The Bulldogs won eight of their last 11 league games to make the postseason event. League regular season champion Catawba finishes 2016 with a 31-17 overall mark and a 17-7 ledger in SAC games.
Krebs was three-for-five with a grand slam and five RBI to lead the offense. Senior first baseman
Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) had a two-run homer. Krebs and Simmons were two of seven Bulldogs who had two hits each. Redshirt freshman catcher
Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) had his first three-hit game in his career, driving in a run while scoring twice. Junior outfielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while freshman
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) added two hits and three runs scored.
Dylan Richardson and
Kyle Smith each homered for Catawba, while
Will Albertson,
Bryce Fowler,
Zach Almond and
Austin Stilley each contributed an RBI for the Indians.
Richardson led off the game with a homer to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. Little scored on Goodwin's RBI single in the third to tie it.
The Bulldogs scored twice in the fourth to take the lead. Freshman
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) plated the first run with a sacrifice fly, while a Billings RBI single made it 3-1.
Wingate added to its lead when Simmons connected on his second homer of the weekend and fourth of the year, a two-run shot to center to make it 5-1. Smith's two-run homer in the sixth made it 5-3.
The Bulldogs countered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to push the lead to six. A hit batsman and two singles loaded the bases for Krebs, who blasted his 13th homer of the year, a grand slam to left to make it 9-3.
Billings scored on a Catawba error in the seventh, while a Krebs RBI double made it 11-3.
Stilley drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to make it 11-4. The Indians scored three in the ninth to make the final margin 11-7. Albertson plated the first run with an RBI single, while a Fowler bases-loaded walk and Almond sacrifice fly cut the lead to four.
Sophomore right-hander
Hunter Morgan (Summerfield, N.C.) got the win, moving to 3-2. He allowed three runs on five hits, striking out a career-high 10 and walking two.
Connor Johnson took the loss, falling to 3-4. He allowed three runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.
The Bulldogs are back in action Thursday, facing Coker in the opening round of the SAC Tournament. Wingate is the number six seed in the tournament, which takes place in Kodak, Tenn. The first game is single-elimination, with the winner moving on to the double-elimination tournament. The Bulldogs are the defending SAC Tournament champion.
