Bulldogs move on to day three of SAC Tourney with 5-1 win over Eagles

Hartsville, S.C.----The third-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs staved off elimination for the second time Friday, defeating fourth-seeded Carson-Newman 5-1 on day two of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference softball tournament. Wingate improves to 32-15 overall, while the Eagles are eliminated from the tournament, falling to 30-21 on the year. The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday at noon.

First team All-SAC infielder Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Fellow first team all-conference selection Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) also homered, while SAC Player of the Year Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) and honorable mention All-SAC honoree Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) each drove in a run for the Bulldogs.

Wingate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Laskey connected on her seventh homer of the year, a solo shot to right.

The Bulldogs plated two more runs in the second to push the lead to three. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with two outs for Helms, who delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0. Sapp followed with an RBI single to push the advantage to three.

Carson-Newman got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Katie Pritchett connected on a solo homer, making it 3-1.

The Bulldogs answered in the top of the fifth. Laskey drew a one-out walk, then scored when Doran blasted her team-best 10th homer of the season, a two-run shot to right-center to make it 5-1. Doran has three homers and nine RBI in her last two games against Carson-Newman.

Senior right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) picked up her second win of the day and 90th of her career, moving to 21-12 on the year. The four-time All-SAC selection allowed a run on six hits in seven innings, striking out two and walking two. Allison Webster took the loss, falling to 20-12. She allowed five runs on six hits in seven innings, striking out two and walking four.

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, facing Queens at 12 p.m. Wingate and Queens met in the opening round Thursday, with the Royals rallying for a 3-1 victory in nine innings. The winner of that contest will be back in action Saturday at 5 p.m.
