Kodak, Tenn.----The sixth-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs piled up 15 hits Saturday afternoon, defeating fifth-seeded Newberry College 14-10 on day three of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Bulldogs improve to 30-21 overall, advancing to day four of the SAC Tournament. Newberry is eliminated from the tournament, falling to 33-19-1.

Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) was three-for-five with a double, homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) went four-for-five with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored, while junior outfielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) was three-for-four with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) added a homer and two RBI, while freshman outfielder
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) went two-for-four with a double, RBI and three runs scored.
Derek Olenchuk had a homer and three RBI to lead the Newberry offense.
JoJo Bradley added three hits, two RBI and a run scored, while
Danton Hyman contributed two RBI and a run scored for the Wolves.
Jacob Bass also had an RBI and a run scored.
Wingate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Billings led off the frame with a double, then scored on an RBI single from Krebs. Brown followed with his team-best 13th homer of the year, a two-run shot to right to give the 'Dogs a three-run lead.
Newberry scored twice in the second, with the first run scoring on a Wingate error, while an RBI single from Bass made it 3-2.
The Bulldogs responded with three more runs in the bottom of the second. A Turgeon single and
Bailey Connell (Waxhaw, N.C.) double put runners on second and third for Billings, who made it 5-2 with a two-run single. Krebs followed with an RBI single to push the lead to four.
Newberry got back within two in the third on Hyman's two-run single. Wingate countered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning, taking an 8-4 lead on a Turgeon RBI double and Goodwin RBI single.
The Wolves scored three more runs in the top of the fourth to make it a one-run game. The first run scored on a Wingate error, while Olenchuk's two-run single made it 8-7.
Wingate added some insurance in the sixth, with Billings and Krebs starting the inning with a single and a double to put runners on second and third.
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) drove home Billings with an RBI groundout, while Krebs scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-7.
The Bulldogs scored two more in the seventh. Goodwin started the inning with a double, followed by a Connell walk. Krebs drove both home with a two-run double to right, pushing the lead to five. The second team all-conference selection now has a SAC-best 64 RBI in his senior year.
Goodwin gave Wingate a 14-7 lead in the bottom of the eighth when he connected on his first career homer, a two-run shot down the right field line.
Olenchuk led off the top of the ninth with a solo homer, while Bradley's two run single made the final margin 14-10.
Junior right-hander
Brandyn Norton (Weaverville, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-1. He tossed 4 2/3 shutout innings in relief, striking out two and walking one. The Wolves loaded the bases in the eighth, but senior right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) got out of the jam with a strikeout. He would go on to earn his seventh save of the season.
Danton Hyman took the loss, falling to 1-4. He allowed six runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings.
The Bulldogs are back in action Sunday, facing the loser of Saturday's Carson-Newman vs. Tusculum contest.
