Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs pushed their winning streak to five Tuesday afternoon, sweeping visiting Coker College in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader. Wingate won by scores of 6-1 and 9-0 to improve to 22-10 overall and 7-5 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 11-26-1 overall and 2-10 in the conference.
Game One: Wingate 6, Coker 1Junior infielder
Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) was three-for-four with a double, three RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack in game one. Senior outfielder
Jordan Wilson (Gastonia, N.C.) also had three hits, driving in a run and scoring a run while senior infielder
Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) was two-for-three with two runs scored. Senior catcher
Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) contributed a double, RBI and run scored, while junior
Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) had a double and an RBI for the Bulldogs.
Coker jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when
Tayler Barcomb connected on a solo shot to left.
Wingate tied it in the bottom of the first. Helms led off the frame with a single, then stole second and scored on an RBI single from Doran.
The Bulldogs scored three times in the third to take the lead. Laskey started things with a one-out double, while Doran followed with an RBI double. Wilson's RBI single made it 3-1, while senior infielder
Emily Usiak (Matthews, N.C.) followed with an RBI single to put the 'Dogs on top by three.
Wingate scored two more runs in the fourth. Laskey plated Helms with an RBI single to make it 5-1, while a sacrifice fly from McLaurin gave the Bulldogs a five-run cushion.
Senior right-hander
Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) got the win, moving to 12-8 on the year. She allowed a run on three hits in seven innings of work, striking out five and walking six while throwing 133 pitches.
Tabitha Allen took the loss, falling to 4-9. She allowed six runs on 15 hits in six innings, striking out five and walking one.
Game Two: Wingate 9, Coker 0 (5 innings)Helms was three-for-three with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Doran added two RBI and two runs scored, while Wilson also drove in a pair of runs for the Bulldogs. Freshman outfielder
Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) added a double, triple, RBI and two runs scored, while Usiak contributed an RBI and a run scored.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Helms got it started when she led off the frame with her seventh homer of the year, a solo shot to right center. Sophomore
Morgan Hendrix (Mocksville, N.C.) followed with a single, stole second, then scored on Wilson's sacrifice fly. Usiak's RBI single gave the 'Dogs a three-run advantage.
Wingate scored four times in the second to push the lead to seven. Sapp doubled to start the frame, then scored on an RBI single from Helms. Doran added a two-run single, while Wilson's RBI double to left center made it 7-0.
The Bulldogs scored two more in the third. Usiak drew a leadoff walk, then scored on an RBI triple from Sapp. Senior outfielder
Shannen Adams (Ayden, N.C.) plated Sapp with a sacrifice fly to make it 9-0.
Freshman right-hander
Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) got the win, moving to 10-2. She tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out seven without walking a batter in a five-inning complete game.
Taylor Forehand took the loss, falling to 2-13. She allowed nine runs on 10 hits in four innings, striking out two and walking two.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to UNC Pembroke for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
