Brown drives in 10 runs in doubleheader split with Brevard; 'Dogs take series

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs took game two of the Saturday afternoon doubleheader over the Brevard College Tornados by a final score of 9-3 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Brevard prevailed 13-11 in game one on Saturday. Wingate sophomore designated hitter Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) blasted three home runs on the day, driving in 10 runs. The Bulldogs improve to 24-17 overall and 8-10 in the SAC. The Tornados are now 13-30 overall and 4-17 in the SAC.
 
Game One: Brevard 13, Wingate 11
 
Senior Brennan Allen (Dade City, Fla.) was three-for-five with six RBI to lead the Brevard offense. Senior Ryan Smith (Indian Trail, N.C.) was also three-for-five and contributed two RBI.
 
Brown was two-for-four with a pair of grand slams and eight RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Junior outfielderfielder Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) was two-for-six with an RBI and two runs scored. Freshman shortstop Bailey Connell (Waxhaw, N.C) finished two-for-four with a double and a single.
 
Brevard took the early 1-0 lead on a one-out RBI single from Smith. The Bulldogs then answered with five runs in the bottom of the third. The first run was on an RBI triple from Billings. Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) and Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) then walked to load the bases for Brown who blasted his first grand slam of the day over the right-field fence to give the 'Dogs a 5-1 lead.
 
The Tornados then exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth, beginning with back-to-back singles and a one-out walk. Allen then knocked a two-run double to left center to cut the lead to 5-3. Blaine Durham (Westfield, N.C.) then drove connected on a go-ahead three-run homer to help Brevard take a 7-5 lead.
 
Brevard added more insurance runs in the top of the 6th on a fielder's choice from Allen and sacrifice fly from Hunter Donaldson (Edneyville, N.C.) to give the Tornadoes an 8-5 advantage. Two more runs came across in the top of the eigth inning for Brevard on a sacrifice fly from Allen and an RBI single from Smith to add on to the lead at 11-5.
 
The 'Dogs then stormed back in the bottom frame for six runs beginning with back-to-back single from freshman outfielder Matthew Grecco (Norfolk, Va.) and Connell. Billings then singled to load the bases. An RBI walk by Krebs scored Grecco to cut the lead down to 11-6. Brown then blasted his second grand slam of the game to make it a one-run ballgame at 11-10. A solo shot from freshman Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) tied the game at 11-11.

Brevard then answered in the top frame of the 9th for two runs on a two-run single from Allen to take a 13-11 lead. The two runs scored by the Tornados were both unearned due to a dropped fly ball and fielding error by Wingate. A Schuyler Martire (Pine Bush, N.Y.) single would advance the runners and set up for the go-ahead two RBI hit. 
 
Sophomore right-hander Drake Black (Williamston, S.C.) got the win for the Tornadoes, moving to 4-1. He would pitch a scoreless frame with three strikeouts. Wingate senior right-hander Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) took the loss, falling to 5-2. He allowed two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore left-hander Kory Behanna (Bahama, N.C.) got the start for Wingate and threw for four innings, allowing six runs on six hits with six strikeouts. He was later replaced by sophomore right-hander Hunter Morgan (Summerfield, N.C.) where he threw for an inning allowing two earned runs on four hits with a strikeout.
 
Game Two: Wingate 9, Brevard 3
 
Krebs finished two-for-three with a homer and three RBI to lead the Bulldog attack in game two. Billings was two-for-three with a triple and two RBI. Barnette was two-for-four with a run scored, while Brown contributed his third homer of the day.
 
The Tornados began the contest with a lead-off single from Allen. Durham then walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Allen scored from second on a throwing error by the pitcher to give Brevard a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, senior Kyle Morrison (Greensboro, N.C.) reached on a fielder's choice allowing Pat Quinn (Elma, N.Y.) to advance to third. Durham then scored from third on another throwing error as the Tornados took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
 
Billings led off the bottom frame with a single, while an RBI double from Krebs plated Billings to cut the lead in half at 2-1. An RBI double from Turgeon then tied the game at 2-2.
 
Brevard regained the lead in top of the second on an RBI single from Donaldson to gain a 3-2 advantage.
 
In the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs answered with three runs beginning with a solo shot from Krebs to tie the contest at 3-3. The senior leads the Bulldogs with 11 homers this season. Brown then followed with a go-ahead two-run homer to give the 'Dogs a 5-3 lead. The reigning SAC Freshman of the Year has eight homers this season.
 
In the sixth, Connell singled to the pitcher and a throwing error by the pitcher scored Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) from third to give the Bulldogs a 6-3 lead. Billings then followed with a two-run triple to push the advantage to 8-3. Wingate then capped off the frame on a sacrifice fly from Krebs to make it a 9-3 contest.

Wingate junior right-hander Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) tossed a complete game gem to pick up the win and improve to 5-2. The Ardrey Kell High School product allowed one earned run on three hits with eight strikeouts. Brevard senior right-hander Hunter Donaldson took the loss, falling to 2-7. He threw for five innings allowing nine runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
 
Wingate University baseball is back in action on Tuesday night, hosting a doubleheader against the Erskine College Fleet beginning at 4 p.m.
