Bulldogs sweep Wolves to move to 12-0 on the year

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs swept visiting Newberry College Tuesday night in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate won by scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21 to improve to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Bulldogs have now won 50 consecutive matches against the Wolves.

Junior outside hitter Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) had 10 kills to lead the Wingate attack, adding five blocks and three digs. Senior right-side hitter Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) contributed nine kills with a .381 hitting percentage, while sophomore outside hitter Oakley Attaway (Orlando, Fla.) had nine kills and seven digs. Freshman middle blocker Lynnlee Mather (McDonough, Ga.) hit .583 with eight kills while adding three blocks. Freshman setter Rachel Alles (Tinley Park, Ill.) compiled 30 assists and nine digs, while classmate Treslyn Ortiz (Texas City, Texas) piled up 16 digs.

Madison Darby-McClure hit .308 with 13 kills to lead the Newberry attack. Sidra Triplett and Toni-Anne Whitlow contributed six kills each, while Andie Meredith and Logan Hayward had five kills apiece. Maggie Marsh handed out 28 assists, while Kensley Jordan collected 12 digs.

Back-to-back kills from Darby-McClure gave the Wolves a 10-8 lead in set one. Wingate scored the next eight points, getting four Bludau kills and two Mather kills to go on top 16-10. A Saehler kill and Mather ace made it 20-13, but another Darby-McClure kill got Newberry back within four at 22-18. A Taylor Williams (Keedysville, Md.) kill and Newberry error made it 24-19, while a Saehler kill ended the set. The Bulldogs hit .417 in the opening frame, with 18 kills and three errors in 36 attacks.

Four early Mather kills, along with a kill and two aces from Saehler gave Wingate an early 9-3 lead in the second set. Kills from Mather and Bludau made it 14-7, but kills from Whitlow and Darby-McClure got Newberry within one at 15-14. Kills from Alles and Williams pushed the lead back to three, while an Alles ace and Saehler kill made it 22-17. Kills from Saehler and Attaway gave the 'Dogs a 24-19 advantage, while a Tyler Smith (Aiken, S.C.) kill ended the set. Wingate hit .467 in the second frame, with 15 kills and just one error in 30 swings.

An Attaway kill and Mather ace gave the Bulldogs a 12-10 lead in the third set, but kills from Whitlow and Hayward gave the Wolves a one-point edge. Wingate responded with a 5-0 run, getting a kill and two blocks from Smith to go on top 19-14. A kill and an ace from Darby-McClure, along with two Wingate errors got the Wolves within one at 20-19. A Bludau kill stretched the lead back to three, but a Hayward kill and Meredith block got Newberry back within a point at 22-21. A service error stretched the lead to two, while a Saehler kill made it 24-21. Saehler followed with another kill to end the match.

Wingate hit .333 on the night, with 44 kills and 10 errors in 102 attacks. Newberry had 37 kills and 19 errors in 114 attacks, hitting .158. Smith and Bludau led the Bulldogs with five blocks each, while Mather and Saehler contributed two aces apiece.

Wingate is back in action Friday, hosting Lincoln Memorial at 7 p.m.
