Wingate, N.C.----The 25th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs remained unbeaten on the year, rolling to a 3-0 victory over visiting Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Tuesday night in Cuddy Arena. Wingate won by scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 26-24 to improve to 15-0 overall and 7-0 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
All-American
Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) piled up 17 kills in 29 swings, hitting .483 while adding 13 digs, three blocks and three aces to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore outside hitter
Oakley Attaway (Orlando, Fla.) had 14 kills and three blocks, hitting .316 while junior
Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) contributed 12 kills with a .357 hitting percentage. Freshman middle blocker
Lynnlee Mather (McDonough, Ga.) hit .500 with seven kills and five blocks, while classmate
Rachel Alles (Tinley Park, Ill.) had 41 assists, 12 digs and three kills. Freshman
Treslyn Ortiz (Texas City, Texas) collected 23 digs on the night.
"This was an awesome win for us tonight," head coach
Shelton Collier says. "Due to injuries, we were forced to play a lineup that we have never used before, so having so many hitters step up and have great matches offensively was very important for us. Anderson has a very good team, so this was a great win for our team tonight."
Marissa Mitter had nine kills, 15 digs and three blocks to lead the Anderson offense.
Kathryn Hughes added seven kills, while
Jessica Harris and
Rachel Burts contributed four kills apiece.
Emily Conlin handed out 26 assists, while
Emily Conard added 10 digs.
Wingate used a 5-0 run to take a 10-6 lead in the opening set, getting a kill and an ace from Saehler in the flurry. Another 5-0 run stretched the advantage to eight at 15-7. Bludau contributed a pair of kills to the spurt. Back-to-back Saehler kills made it 20-10, while kills from Attaway and Mather made it 24-14. A Bludau kill ended the opening set. The Bulldogs hit .613 in the first frame, piling up 19 kills without committing an error.
Kills from Saehler and Attaway, along with a block and a kill from Mather gave the 'Dogs an 11-6 lead in set two. The Trojans battled back, making it 11-11 on a kill and a block from Mitter. Kills from Saehler and Bludau put the Bulldogs back on top, but a Burts kill tied the set at 16. Wingate responded with a 5-0 run, getting two Saehler aces to take a 21-16 advantage. A Mather kill made it 23-18, but a kill and a block from Conlin got Anderson within three. Alles answered with a kill, while a Bludau kill ended the second set.
Two kills and a block from Saehler helped Wingate jump out to a 7-2 lead in the third frame. A Mitter kill got the Trojans within three, but kills from Bludau and Saehler made it 14-9. Anderson answered with a 7-2 run, tying it at 16 on a Burts kill. An Attaway kill and Mather block made it 18-16, while a Saehler kill stretched the lead to three. Anderson got back within one at 23-22 on a kill from
Mallory McFerron, but an error made it 24-22. A Hughes kill and
Megan Embry ace tied it at 24, but an Attaway kill put Wingate on top 25-24. Bludau ended the match with a kill.
The Bulldogs hit .341 on the night, piling up 54 kills against 12 errors in 123 attacks. Anderson had 33 kills and 18 errors in 123 attacks, hitting .122. Mather led the way with five blocks, while Saehler chipped in with four blocks. Saehler had three of Wingate's four aces.
Wingate is back in action Friday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs play two matches Saturday, hosting Brevard at 12 p.m. while welcoming defending national champion Wheeling Jesuit to Cuddy Arena at 5 p.m.
