Dominguez’s career night leads ‘Dogs to 10th straight win

Wingate, N.C.----­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Wingate University senior forward Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) poured in a career-high 29 points Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to an 84-67 victory over visiting Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate wins its 10th straight, improving to 13-7 overall and 10-4 in the SAC. Tusculum falls to 8-12 overall and 5-9 in the conference. It is the first 10-game winning streak for the Bulldogs since the 2001-02 season.

"Our defensive effort in the second half was really good," head coach Brian Good says. "I thought Josh's offense really opened up the game in the second half and I thought Lee McCall did a great job on the glass."

Dominguez went 10-for-17 from the field, hitting six-of-eight shots from three-point range while adding six rebounds. Junior guard Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) added 18 points and four rebounds, hitting three-of-five shots from beyond the arc while sophomore guard Mike Baez (Orlando, Fla.) contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Senior forward Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) added eight points and six boards for the Bulldogs, while junior forward Lee McCall (Indian Land, S.C.) had five points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.

Cory Fagan had 15 points and seven rebounds to lead the Tusculum attack, hitting five-of-10 shots from three-point range. Kendall Patterson added 12 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists, while Chase Mounce contributed 10 points and nine boards.

Wingate jumped out to a 15-7 lead, getting six early points from Lolar and five from Dominguez. A Trey Blevins layup got the Pioneers within three, but a Camari Wilkerson (Glen Burnie, Md.) layup at the 8:41 mark made it 29-21. Patterson scored the next eight points for Tusculum, making it 29-28 with 6:23 to go.

The Bulldogs countered with an 8-0 run, taking a 37-28 advantage at the 4:16 mark. Lolar started the flurry with a dunk and a three, while a Baez triple put the 'Dogs back on top by nine. A Patterson layup with 2:28 to go got the Pioneers within five, while Wingate went the final three minutes without a point. Fagan's three in the final seconds got Tusculum within two, making the halftime score 39-37.

Fagan knocked down a triple four minutes into the second half to tie the game at 45. A Lolar bucket and Dominguez triple, along with a pair of Baez free throws put Wingate back on top by seven, while two Dominguez free throws made it 54-45 at the 12:23 mark. Blevins answered with a three to get TC within six, but threes from Dominguez and Lolar put the Bulldogs on top 60-49 at the midway point of the second half.

Dominguez knocked down a pair of triples in a 30-second span to give Wingate a 68-55 lead with eight minutes to go. He added another triple a minute later to give the Bulldogs a 16-point advantage. Cureton's layup with five minutes left made it 75-58. Fagan's three got Tusculum back within 11 at the 4:18 mark, but buckets from Cureton, Baez and Dominguez made it 81-64 with 2:26 remaining. Doyle's bucket pushed the advantage to 19 at the 1:23 mark, the largest lead of the night.

Wingate shot 42.6 percent from the field, hitting 11-of-20 shots from three-point range (55 percent). Tusculum shot 39.4 percent from the field, hitting 10-of-27 shots from beyond the arc (37 percent). The Bulldogs out-rebounded Tusculum 47-38, holding an 18-12 edge in second-chance points. The Bulldogs led for over 37 minutes Saturday and never trailed.
