Lilburn, Ga.----The Wingate University women's basketball team is number six in the
WBCA NCAA Division II top 25 coaches' poll, officials announce Tuesday. Wingate (3-0 overall) moves up eight spots from its number 14 position in the preseason poll.
"Although it is very nice to be recognized and respected by other coaches, the rankings at this time of the year are not something we spend a lot of time discussing," Wingate head women's basketball coach
Ann Hancock says. "We have to take one game at a time and focus on what we need to do every day to improve. With so many new players, there are lots of things we must get better at to reach our full potential. Our league and region are very good and it's a long season."
Wingate travels to South Carolina to face number 24 Lander University tonight (Tuesday, Nov. 21) at 5:30 p.m. The Bulldogs return home Sunday to host UNC Pembroke. Game time in Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court is slated for 4 p.m.
Wingate leads the South Atlantic Conference with 15 appearances in the NCAA Division II national tournament. The Bulldogs have an overall NCAA tourney record of 15-15 with Elite Eight appearances in 1995, 1996 and 2008. Wingate has won 11 SAC regular season championships and nine SAC tournament crowns.
