Embry-Riddle holds off Wingate in defensive struggle

Daytona Beach, Fla.----The Embry-Riddle University Eagles defeated Wingate University 59-49 Saturday afternoon on day two of the Bahama House Classic. The Eagles improve to 4-3 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-5 on the season.

Nashad Mackey had 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Embry-Riddle offense. Luka Majstorovic added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Elijah Jenkins contributed 12 points, three boards and two blocks.

Junior forward Neico Robinson (Easley, S.C.) had 15 points and seven rebounds to lead the Wingate offense. Junior guard Marco Haskins (Fredericksburg, Va.) added 14 points and five boards, while senior guard Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) had 11 points, four rebounds and two steals. Graduate student point guard Kerigan Farley (Hickory, N.C.) contributed six points, five rebounds and four assists.

A Lolar three gave Wingate an early 7-6 lead, but Embry-Riddle scored the next nine points, taking a 15-7 lead on a Joshua Hawkins layup at the 13:32 mark. Buckets from Robinson and Lolar got the 'Dogs within three, while a Robinson bucket made it a one-point game at the midway point.

The Eagles scored the next six points, taking a 22-15 advantage on a Hawkins bucket. A jumper and two free throws from Robinson got Wingate within two with three minutes left in the half, but a three from Hunter Cole gave Embry-Riddle a 32-25 lead heading to halftime.

A jumper from Devarious Christian (Charlotte, N.C.) got the Bulldogs within two early in the second half, but a pair of Majstorovic buckets pushed the advantage back to six at the 13:12 mark. Lolar got the 'Dogs back within two with a layup, while Haskins made it a one-point game with nine minutes remaining. The Eagles scored the next nine points, taking a 50-40 lead on a Cole bucket at the 6:41 mark. Wingate got no closer than eight the rest of the way.

Embry-Riddle shot 36 percent on the day, hitting six-of-18 shots from beyond the arc (33 percent). Wingate shot 32 percent on the afternoon, connecting on three-of-18 shots from three-point range (17 percent). The Eagles held a 42-32 rebounding advantage, while turning 14 Wingate turnovers into 11 points.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, opening conference play at home against Newberry at 8 p.m.
