Rock Hill, S.C.----The top-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs scored three times in the final 18 minutes Friday afternoon, downing fourth-seeded Lincoln Memorial University 3-0 in the semifinals of the 2017 South Atlantic Conference men's soccer tournament at Manchester Meadows. Wingate improves to 13-4-1 overall, advancing to Sunday's SAC championship match. The Railsplitters fall to 10-4-3 on the year.
The first half went scoreless, with LMU holding a 6-4 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs to not put a shot on frame until
Elliot Cutts (London, England) put one on goal in the final seconds of the opening half, but
Caleb Cothrin was there for the save.
Wingate got on the board in the 73rd minute. Senior forward
Elma N'For (Yaoundé, Cameroon) was taken down in the box, earning a penalty kick. All-American
Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) converted the PK to put the 'Dogs on top 1-0.
Wingate added to its lead in the 89th minute, with
Nate Evans (Greenville, N.C.) finding Ander behind the defense. The 2015 SAC Player of the Year beat the keeper one-on-one to net his seventh goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Evans added another insurance goal with 18 seconds remaining, taking a feed from N'For and finding the back of the net for the first time this year to make the final margin 3-0.
Wingate outshot LMU 11-2 in the second half, holding a 15-8 advantage on the day, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. All-American goalkeeper
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) had three saves for the Bulldogs, while Cothrin collected three saves for Lincoln Memorial.
The Bulldogs are in the SAC title match for the second time in three years, facing the winner of Friday afternoon's Anderson vs. Queens match. Wingate won the SAC Tournament title in 2015, defeating Queens 2-0. The Bulldogs defeated Queens and Anderson by identical 4-1 scores this year, with N'For collecting two goals and an assist in each contest. The SAC title match will be at 1 p.m. in Rock Hill.
