Wingate downs Anderson 2-1 to advance to eighth straight SAC title match

Rock Hill, S.C.----The second-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs scored twice in a two-minute span in the first half Friday night, downing sixth-seeded Anderson University 2-1 in the semifinals of the 2017 South Atlantic Conference women's soccer tournament. Wingate improves to 11-3 overall, advancing to the SAC title match for the eighth consecutive year. Anderson falls to 6-9-2 on the year.

Wingate got on the board in the 19th minute. A cross from junior Gabby Fleischli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) went towards Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) in the box. The senior lined home a one-timer for her team-best seventh goal of the season to get the Bulldogs on the board.

The Bulldogs struck again less than two minutes later. A Colleen Zickert (Arlington, Heights, Ill.) corner kick was placed into the middle of the box, where junior midfielder Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) was there to head home her fifth goal of the year and third of the SAC Tournament to make it 2-0.

Anderson wasted little time getting back into it, finding the back of the net in the 22nd minute when Lauren Allan took a loose ball in the box off a corner kick and netted her sixth goal of the year to make it 2-1.

The Trojans put some pressure on the Bulldogs in the second half, taking five shots including four shots on goal, but Wingate senior goalkeeper Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) was there to keep the Bulldogs on top.

The Bulldogs ended the night with a 10-9 advantage in shots, with Anderson holding an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Moore took a match-high five shots on the night, while Megan Foster and Gabby Fleming each registered three shots on goal for the Trojans. Jones piled up seven saves for the Bulldogs, while Abby Helm collected a pair of saves for Anderson.

Wingate is onto the SAC title match for an eighth consecutive year, facing top-seeded and second-ranked Carson-Newman at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Eagles defeated Tusculum 2-1 in overtime Friday evening. This marks the third straight year Wingate and Carson-Newman will meet in the title match. The Eagles prevailed 1-0 in 2015 and 2-1 in 2016. The Bulldogs have claimed three SAC Tournament titles, with all three championships coming after the 2010 season.
