Salisbury, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs had four players score over 15 points Tuesday morning, prevailing 85-77 at Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Bulldogs improve to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 3-7 overall and 0-5 in league play.
Graduate student point guard
Kerigan Farley (Hickory, N.C.) had a career-high 21 points to lead the Wingate offense, adding seven assists, six rebounds and three steals. Senior guard
Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) had 17 points, six assists, five boards and three steals, while juniors
Neico Robinson (Easley, S.C.) and
Marco Haskins (Fredericksburg, Va.) contributed 16 points apiece, combining to hit six-of-11 shots from three-point range.
Jerrin Morrison had 19 points to lead the Catawba attack.
DJ Johnson added 17 points, four rebounds and three blocks, while
John McRae and
RJ Robinson contributed eight points apiece for the Indians.
A Lolar three and Farley layup highlighted an 8-0 Wingate run that gave the Bulldogs a 21-12 lead at the 9:10 mark of the first half. A
Jeremy McLaughlin layup got the Indians within seven, but another Lolar triple extended the advantage to 12 with 7:30 to go. Morrison's bucket with five minutes left got Catawba back within seven, but Farley countered with a triple, while a Robinson bucket in the final minute helped the Bulldogs take a 42-32 lead into halftime.
Wingate scored 22 points in the first 6:30 of the second half to extend the lead to 19. Haskins hit a pair of threes early in the flurry, while Farley scored eight points during the stretch. Robinson's three made it 64-45 with 13:22 left. Catawba used a 10-0 run to trim the deficit to six, with a McRae three and Barber bucket making it 69-63 with eight minutes remaining.
Lolar knocked down a triple to push the lead back to nine, while a Haskins three put the 'Dogs on top 79-69 with 3:43 to go. Three Morrison free throws cut the lead to seven, but another Lolar triple put Wingate on top by 10 with two minutes left. Robinson's free throws with under a minute remaining extended the advantage to 12.
Wingate shot a season-high 52.7 percent from the field to score its season-high 85 points, hitting 13-of-24 shots from beyond the arc (54.2 percent). Catawba shot 43.7 percent from the field, connecting on six-of-22 shots from beyond the arc (27.3 percent). The Indians held a 41-32 rebounding advantage and 17-9 edge in second chance points.
The Bulldogs are back in action Dec. 30, hosting Mount Olive at 2 p.m.
