Wingate splits Saturday doubleheader at Valdosta State

Valdosta, Ga.----The Wingate University Bulldogs got three homers in game one of Saturday's NCAA Division II baseball doubleheader at Valdosta State, prevailing 17-9, but the Blazers held on for a 4-3 victory in game two. Wingate moves to 2-4 on the season, while Valdosta State is 5-2 overall.

Game One: Wingate 17, Valdosta State 9

Senior Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) had a homer, four RBI and three runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Freshman Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) went four-for-five with two doubles, a homer, three RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore catcher Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) also homered, driving in three runs while scoring three times. Junior Aaron Nanney (Gastonia, N.C.) added a double, two RBI and a run scored, while junior Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) contributed a double, two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) had an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs.

Tyler Homer was three-for-four with a pair of homers, four RBI and three runs scored to lead the Valdosta State attack. Ryan Slaughter added an RBI and two runs scored, while Dalton Murray added a homer. Elias Macias and BJ White each drove in a run for the Blazers.

Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) doubled, then scored on a Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) sacrifice fly. Homer's RBI double in the bottom of the frame tied it, while a pair of Wingate errors allowed the Blazers to take a 3-1 lead.

The Bulldogs piled up six runs in the third, with Mason starting the frame with a double, then scoring on an RBI double from Andrus. Barnette followed by connecting on his first homer of the year, a three-run shot to left to give Wingate a 5-3 lead. A VSU error and Daniel sacrifice fly put the Bulldogs on top by four.

Homer led off the bottom of the frame with a solo shot to make it 7-4. Barnette plated Little with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it 8-4.

The Bulldogs took a six-run lead in the sixth when Goodwin connected on his first homer of the season, a three-run shot to make it 11-5. Another Wingate error, along with a two-run shot from Homer got the Blazers within three in the bottom of the sixth.

Mason connected on his first career homer in the seventh to make it 12-8. Murray led off the bottom of the frame with a solo shot to get Valdosta State back within three.

Wingate scored five runs in the top of the eighth to take a 17-9 lead. Nanney started it with a two-run double to right, while Mason's two-run double to right center made it 16-9. Andrus capped the scoring in game one with an RBI groundout, plating Daniel to make it 17-9.

Senior right-hander Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-1 on the year. He allowed three earned runs in five innings of work, striking out four while allowing eight hits. Daniel Williams took the loss, falling to 1-1. He allowed five runs on five hits in two innings, striking out one and walking one.

Game Two: Valdosta State 4, Wingate 3

Homer once again led the VSU attack, connecting on a homer while driving in two runs. Cody Ilgenfritz added a hit and an RBI for the Blazers.

Mason, Brown and Little each had a hit and an RBI to lead the Wingate attack, while Andrus added a hit and two runs scored for the Bulldogs.

Valdosta State did all of its damage in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs on five hits and two errors. Homer put the Blazers on the board with a two-run shot, while a Wingate error and Ilgenfritz RBI single made it 4-0.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the third, with Andrus starting it with a one-out double. He scored on an RBI single from Little to make it 4-1. Sophomore Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) started the fourth with a double, then scored on Mason's RBI single to get the 'Dogs within two.

Wingate scored one more run in the seventh to get within one. A walk and error put two on with two outs for Brown, whose RBI single made it 4-3. Beau Blair came in for the Blazers to record the final out, inducing a game-ending popout.

Austin Hamilton got the win, moving to 1-0. He allowed three runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out eight. Junior right-hander Hunter Hamilton (Troy, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-1. He allowed two earned runs on six hits in six innings of work, striking out six and walking one.

The Bulldogs and Blazers wrap up the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
