Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs used a 16-1 run over the final four minutes, rolling to a 98-79 victory over visiting Coker College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs notch their 14th win in the last 15 games, improving to 17-8 overall and 14-5 in the conference. Coker falls to 7-18 overall and 4-15 in the conference. The win guarantees the Bulldogs will host a game in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals.
"I thought for 36 minutes Coker did a great job dictating the pace of the game," head coach Brian Good says. "They got us to hurry on offense and attacked us off the dribble. I thought our guys did a nice job of making the right plays and the right decisions down the stretch to give us a chance to pull away.
Senior forward
Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) led the way with 23 points and 14 rebounds, adding two blocks and a steal while going nine-for-14 from the field. Sophomore guard
Mike Baez (Orlando, Fla.) added 19 points and seven rebounds, while senior forward
Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) contributed 18 points on five-of-six shooting from the field and eight-of-nine shooting at the free throw line. Junior guard
Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) had 13 points, while senior center
Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) compiled 11 points, eight rebounds and five blocks.
Jake Barrett had 24 points, four rebounds and three steals to lead the Coker attack.
Jalal Abdul-Azeez added 13 points, while
Demarco Jackson contributed eight points, hitting six-of-seven shots from the free throw line.
A Barrett layup gave the Cobras a 14-6 lead four minutes into the opening half. Dominguez got the 'Dogs within four with a pair of free throws, but a
LaDarius Williams layup made it 21-12 with 12:24 to go. Back-to-back Dominguez buckets got the Bulldogs within three, while a Griffin bucket at the 9:24 mark tied it at 23. A Lolar three-point play and Griffin bucket capped a 10-0 run, giving Wingate a 28-23 advantage with 8:25 to go.
Buckets from Williams and Barrett tied it at the 4:28 mark, but a Cureton triple made it 38-33 a minute later.
Roman Hall tied it with a pair of free throws, but a Baez three-point play and Cureton bucket put the 'Dogs back on top by five in the final minute. Barrett buried a triple with six seconds left to get the Cobras within two at halftime.
A Williams bucket three minutes into the second half tied it, but Wingate used an 8-1 run to take a 57-50 lead on a Cureton bucket. Jackson's three-point play got Coker within one at the 10:22 mark, but buckets from Cureton and Baez, followed by back-to-back Griffin buckets gave the 'Dogs a 74-65 advantage with 7:20 remaining.
A three from Abdul-Azeez, along two Barrett free throws got the Cobras within six with 4:14 to go. Wingate countered with a 16-1 run. Lolar started the flurry with a layup, while Dominguez added a three-point play. Two Baez free throws, followed by a three-point play from
Lee McCall (Indian Land, S.C.) gave the Bulldogs a 21-point lead with 36 seconds to go.
The Bulldogs shot a season-high 56.4 percent from the field, hitting two-of-10 shots from three-point range (20 percent). Coker shot 45 percent from the field, hitting six-of-17 shots from beyond the arc (35.3 percent). The Bulldogs held a dominant 47-26 rebounding advantage, holding a 20-11 edge in second-chance points along with a 50-32 edge in points in the paint. The teams combined to take 79 free throws, including 54 in the second half. Wingate went 34-for-45 on the night (75.6 percent).
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting Carson-Newman on Senior Day at 4 p.m.
