Bulldogs go 1-1 on opening day of Flagler Classic

St. Augustine, Fla.----The Wingate University Bulldogs opened the Flagler Classic with a 5-2 victory over Flagler College Saturday afternoon, while Palm Beach Atlantic rallied for a 5-4 eight-inning victory over the Bulldogs in NCAA Division II softball action. Wingate moves to 5-7 on the season.

Game One: Wingate 5, Flagler 2

Senior infielder Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) hit a pair of homers to lead the Wingate offense in game one Saturday. Freshman infielder Mary Claire Coyne (Knoxville, Tenn.) also homered, going three-for-four while driving in a pair of runs. Freshman Rebekah Woods (Sylvania, Ga.) added a double and two runs scored.

Woods got Wingate on the board in the first, connecting on a double and scoring on an error to make it 1-0. The Saints took advantage of a Wingate error in the bottom of the first, scoring a run without a hit to make it 1-1.

McLaurin started the second inning with her second homer of the year, a solo shot to make it 2-1. Woods led off the third with a walk, then scored when Coyne connected on her first career homer, a two-run shot to make it 4-1.

McLaurin's second homer of the day and third of the season came in the sixth, another solo shot to make it 5-1. A solo homer from Alli-Ann Bigale in the bottom of the seventh made the final margin 5-2.

Freshman right-hander Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) got the win, moving to 4-2. She allowed one earned run on three hits in seven innings, striking out seven and walking four. Katelynn Smith took the loss, falling to 2-5. She allowed two runs on four hits in two innings of work.

Game Two: Palm Beach Atlantic 5, Wingate 4 (8 Innings)

Freshman catcher Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) drove in a pair of runs to lead the Wingate offense in game two, while classmate Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) added a double, RBI and run scored. McLaurin added an RBI, while freshman Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) had two hits and two runs scored.

A Wingate error allowed Palm Beach Atlantic to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Swenson scored on VonCannon's RBI single in the second to make it 1-1, but an RBI single from Magnolia West gave the Sailfish a 2-1 lead in the third.

Senior outfielder Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) scored on a McLaurin sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to tie the game. Wingate scored twice in the sixth inning to take the lead. VonCannon plated Swenson with an RBI double to give the Bulldogs the lead, while a Floyd sacrifice fly plated VonCannon to make it 4-2.

Palm Beach Atlantic scored twice in the seventh to tie it. The first run scored on West's RBI groundout, while Alexis Brown's RBI single tied it, forcing extra innings. Alexis Guerra's RBI single in the eighth gave PBA a 5-4 victory.

Ashton Adkins got the win, moving to 3-1. She allowed four runs on six hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking two. Reep took the loss in relief, allowing an unearned run in 1 1/3 innings, striking out two.

The Bulldogs are back in action Sunday, facing Flagler at 10 a.m. and Palm Beach Atlantic at 12 p.m.
