Floyd’s seventh-inning slam highlights doubleheader sweep at Augusta

Augusta, Ga.----Wingate University freshman catcher Jordan Floyd's (Wilmington, N.C.) first career homer was a memorable one, connecting on a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning Thursday afternoon in game two at Augusta, leading the visiting Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep in NCAA Division II softball action. Wingate won the opener 7-2, while Floyd provided the offense in the 4-2 game two victory as the 'Dogs moved to 7-9 on the season. Augusta falls to 3-13 overall.

Game One: Wingate 7, Augusta 2

Freshman Rebekah Woods (Sylvania, Ga.) went two-for-four with three RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack in game one. Senior Misty Doran (Century, Fla.), sophomore Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) and freshman Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) each contributed an RBI and a run scored, while freshman Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) added two hits and two runs scored.

Wingate scored three times in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead. A Floyd single, Sapp walk and wild pitch put runners on second and third for Woods, who plated Floyd with an RBI single. Sapp scored on Doran's RBI single, while Woods would come around to score on a wild pitch to give the 'Dogs a three-run advantage.

VonCannon led off the fourth with a double, then scored on Sapp's RBI single to make it 4-0. Two walks and a VonCannon single loaded the bases for Woods in the fifth, who put the 'Dogs on top by six with a two-run single.

Two walks and a bunt single loaded the bases for the Jaguars in the fifth, with a hit batsman and walk forcing in a pair runs to make it 6-2. Doran drew a leadoff walk in the top of the sixth and would come around to score on Swenson's RBI groundout to make it 7-2.

Sophomore right-hander Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) got the win, moving to 2-4. She allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings, striking out six. Kristen Mills took the loss, falling to 1-5. She allowed four runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking five.

Game Two: Wingate 4, Augusta 2

Floyd drove in all four runs for the Bulldogs in game two. Swenson, VonCannon and senior Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) each had two hits and a run scored, while Sapp added a double for Wingate.

Augusta took the lead in the third, scoring a pair of runs on Lydia Hausman's two-out, two-run double to left center.

That would be all of the scoring until the top of the seventh. McLaurin started the inning with a single to left, while Swenson followed with a single up the middle. VonCannon's infield single loaded the bases for Floyd, who connected on her first career homer, a grand slam to make it 4-2.

Freshman right-hander Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) got the win, moving to 5-5 on the year. She allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings of work, striking out a career-high 10 while walking just one. Morgan Hunter took the loss, falling to 0-2.
