Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs had six different players drive in a run Friday night, prevailing 7-3 against visiting Mars Hill University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate improves to 13-9 overall and 4-0 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 10-11 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Freshman outfielder
Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) had a double, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) went three-for-four with an RBI, while juniors
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) and
Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.), along with sophomore
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) each contributed a hit, RBI and run scored for the Bulldogs. Sophomore
Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) also registered a hit and an RBI.
Wingate scored five runs in the first two innings, starting with a two-run first. Mason scored the game's first run on Goodwin's RBI single, while Llewellyn followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Andrus gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead in the second with an RBI double. Mason lined a two-run double to deep center in the third to put Wingate on top by five.
Mars Hill got on the board in the fourth, loading the bases via an error, single and hit batsman. The Lions plated their lone run of the frame on a double play. Mars Hill scored twice in the fifth, getting sacrifice flies from
Daniel Vitello and
Brett Brubaker to make it 5-3.
Wingate extended its lead in the sixth with a pair of runs. Brown plated the first run with an RBI single, then scored on a Turgeon sacrifice fly to make it 7-3.
Senior right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, improving to 5-2 on the year. He allowed one earned run on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out six and walking five. Senior right-hander
Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) worked a scoreless inning to earn his first save of the year, notching a strikeout.
Zac Brown took the loss, falling to 1-2. He allowed six earned runs on 10 hits in six innings, striking out four and walking four. Each team left 12 runners on base Friday night.
Wingate and Mars Hill are back in action, wrapping up the three-game series with a doubleheader, with game one starting at 1 p.m.
