Wingate, N.C.----The North Greenville University Crusaders rallied for a 2-1 nine-inning victory in game one of Saturday's NCAA Division II softball doubleheader at Wingate University, while the Bulldogs responded with a 4-1 victory in game two. The Bulldogs move to 13-13 on the year, while the Crusaders are 16-12 overall.
Game One: North Greenville 2, Wingate 1 (9 innings)
The Crusaders scored a run in the seventh and one more in the ninth as Wingate fell to 0-5 in extra-inning games on the year.
Kate Lee was one-for-three with an RBI and run scored to lead the NGU offense.
Megan Johnson added three hits for the Crusaders.
Senior infielder
Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) had a hit and an RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Freshman
Rebekah Woods (Sylvania, Ga.) added a hit and a run scored.
Wingate raced out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Woods reached on a one-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Doran's RBI single.
That was all of the scoring until the top of the seventh. Lee started the inning with a double, then moved to third on a single. A foulout and strikeout were the first two outs of the inning, but on the strikeout, Lee scored on a double steal to tie it 1-1 and send the game to extras.
Neither team scored in the eighth. The Crusaders took the lead in the top of the ninth on Lee's sacrifice fly, making it 2-1. Wingate was unable to answer, stranding runners on first and third in the bottom of the ninth.
Brooklyn Fort got the win, allowing a run on five hits in nine innings, striking out four and walking three. Sophomore right-hander
Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 5-6. She allowed one earned run on six hits in nine innings, striking out six and walking one.
Game Two: Wingate 4, North Greenville 1
Freshman catcher
Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) homered to lead the Wingate offense, while senior outfielder
Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) added a triple, RBI and run scored. Freshman outfielder
Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) added a hit and an RBI, while classmate
Mary Claire Coyne (Knoxville, Tenn.) contributed a hit and run scored.
North Greenville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when
Shayna Finley connected on a solo homer to start the game.
Wingate got on the board in the fourth, tying the game when Coyne scored on VonCannon's RBI single.
The Bulldogs scored three times in the fifth to take the lead. Floyd started the frame by connecting on her third homer of the year, a solo shot to left to make it 2-1. Smith added an RBI triple, then scored on a wild pitch to give Wingate a three-run advantage.
Freshman right-hander
Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) got the win, moving to 8-7. She allowed a run on eight hits in seven innings, striking out six and walking four.
Amanda Coffrin took the loss, falling to 7-7. She allowed four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Wingate is back in action next Saturday, opening SAC play at Lincoln Memorial with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
