Newberry uses big third inning to take series opener at Wingate

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead Friday night, but Newberry College countered with a nine-run third en route to a 10-3 victory in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Newberry improves to 22-14 overall and 8-5 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 15-19 overall and 6-7 in the conference.

Every Newberry starter had a hit and a run scored, with Derek Olenchuk and Jeff Sneed each driving in a pair of runs while also combining for six hits and three runs scored. Robert Kosch and Danton Hyman had three hits apiece for the Wolves, who collected 20 hits Friday night.

Sophomore infielder Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) had a double, RBI and run scored to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore catcher Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) added an RBI, while freshman outfielder Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) collected two hits and a run scored.

Mason started the bottom of the first with a single, then moved to third on a Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) double. Little's RBI single plated Mason, while Llewellyn's RBI single drove in Barnette. Little then stole home when the Wolves tried to throw out a runner at first to make it 3-0.

Newberry piled up nine runs on eight hits in the third inning, starting with a Hyman RBI single. Olenchuk's two-run single put the Wolves on top, while Trejon Smith and Sneed followed with RBI singles to make it 6-3. Zach White's RBI single made it 7-3, while Kosch capped the scoring in the inning with an RBI bunt single. Sneed's RBI double in the fourth made the final margin 10-3.
