Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior first baseman
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) had two homers and eight RBI Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep against visiting Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won game one 14-4, while prevailing 3-1 in game two to finish the weekend sweep, improving to 11-8 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in the SAC.
Game One: Wingate 14, Anderson 4
Brown was three-for-four with a homer, six RBI and three runs scored to lead the offense. Junior
Aaron Nanney (Gastonia, N.C.) added a double and two RBI, while freshman outfielder
Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) and junior outfielder
Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) combined for four hits, two RBI and five run scored. Senior infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, while sophomores
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) and
Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) each drove in a run.
Anderson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run single from
Michael Rochester.
Wingate took the lead in the third, getting runners on first and second via an error and walk for Brown, who connected on his sixth homer of the year to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 advantage.
The Trojans tied it in the fourth when
Carson Barrett led off the frame with a solo homer, making it 3-3.
Wingate scored five times in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead. Mason's RBI bunt single plated the first run, while Brown drove home the next run when he reached on an error. Barnette,
Micah Goodwin (Rougemont, N.C.) and Turgeon added RBI singles in the frame to give the 'Dogs a five-run advantage.
Wingate took a 10-3 lead in the seven when Nanney ripped a pinch-hit two-run double off the fence in right. An RBI double from Andrus in the eighth made it 11-3, while Brown followed with a two-run single to put the Bulldogs on top by 10. A sacrifice fly from Llewellyn made it 14-3.
Junior right-hander
Hunter Hamilton (Troy, N.C.) got the win, moving to 2-0. He allowed three runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking two.
Josh McMicking took the loss, falling to 0-3. He allowed eight runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking two.
Game Two: Wingate 3, Anderson 1
Brown had a homer and two RBI two once again lead the Wingate offense. Turgeon added a triple and an RBI, while Andrus had a double and a run scored.
Wingate got on the board in the first inning. Andrus reached on a one-out double, then scored when Brown connected on a two-run shot to right, his third of the weekend series and seventh of the year to make it 2-0.
The Bulldogs got an insurance run in the fourth, starting when Goodwin reached on an error. He scored on Turgeon's RBI triple down the right field line to make it 3-0.
Anderson got on the board in the sixth, scoring on a Wingate error to make it 3-1. Junior left-hander
Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.) shut the door on the Trojans in the seventh, collecting a pair of strikeouts to notch his second save of the year.
Junior right-hander
Hunter Morgan (Summerfield, N.C.) got the win, moving to 3-2 on the year. He allowed an unearned run on six hits in six innings of work, striking out two without walking a batter to notch his third straight win. In his last three starts, Morgan is 3-0, allowing just two earned runs in 23 innings of work.
Chris Ayers took the loss, falling to 2-2. He allowed three runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, traveling to Mount Olive for a 6 p.m. start. The Bulldogs play at Mount Olive again on Wednesday, while returning home Friday night to open a three-game series against Mars Hill at 6 p.m.
