Bobcats take a pair of close games against Bulldogs

Wingate, N.C.----The Georgia College Bobcats won a pair of tightly contested games Sunday afternoon in NCAA Division II softball action at Wingate University, prevailing 10-8 in nine innings in the first game, while hanging on for a 5-4 victory in game two. Georgia College improves to 13-9 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 10-12 on the season.

Game One: Georgia College 10, Wingate 8 (9 innings)

Baylee Hall went three-for-four with three RBI to lead the Georgia College offense, while Hannah Coursey added a pair of RBI for the Bobcats. Deja Lester, Holland Coursey and Amber Coy each added an RBI and two runs scored, while Faith Flanders also drove in a run.

Freshman Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) was three-for-four with two RBI to lead the Wingate offense, while senior Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) drove in a pair of runs for the Bulldogs. Freshmen Rebekah Woods (Sylvania, Ga.) and Mary Claire Coyne (Knoxville, Tenn.) each had two hits and an RBI, combining to score three runs while sophomore Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) piled up three hits and three runs scored. Senior Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) added two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while freshman Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) contributed an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs.

Wingate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with Coyne's RBI double off the wall in left starting the scoring. Doran added an RBI single, while Swenson's RBI groundout made it 3-0.

Hall's RBI double in the second got the Bobcats on the board. Georgia College scored twice in the fifth, tying it at 3-3 on Lester's RBI groundout and a Wingate error.

Georgia College took its first lead when Hannah Coursey's RBI single in the sixth made it 4-3. Doran led off the bottom of the frame with a single, then scored on VonCannon's RBI single to tie it heading to the seventh.

The Bobcats regained the lead in the top of the seventh, taking a 6-4 advantage on a Hall RBI double. Wingate answered in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases for McLaurin, whose two-out two-run single tied it 6-6, sending the game to extras.

Georgia College regained a one-run lead in the top of the eighth on a Hannah Coursey sacrifice fly. VonCannon's RBI single in the bottom of the frame tied it at seven, sending it to the ninth.

The Bobcats scored three times in the ninth, with Holland Coursey plating the first run with an RBI triple. A Flanders RBI single and Hall RBI triple made it 10-7. Woods got Wingate within two in the top of the eighth with an RBI single, but the Bulldogs would get no closer.

Kayla Price got the win, moving to 7-2. She allowed eight runs on 13 hits in nine innings, striking out three without walking a batter. Freshman right-hander Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 6-7. She allowed four earned runs on 11 hits in nine innings of work, striking out three and walking one.

Game Two: Georgia College 5, Wingate 4

Lester was two-for-four with four RBI and a run scored to lead the Georgia College attack in game two. Holland Coursey added two hits and an RBI for the Bobcats.

Swenson drove in two runs for the Bulldogs in game two, while Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) and Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) each had two hits and an RBI. Sapp added three hits and a run scored.

Wingate scored twice in the bottom of the first, taking a 2-0 lead on Swenson's two-run single.

Georgia College answered with four runs in the second to take the lead. Lester's three-run double was the big blow of the frame, while Holland Coursey's RBI single plated Lester to make it 4-2.

Wingate got within a run in the fifth when McLaurin scored on Floyd's RBI single. Lester's RBI single in the top of the seventh gave Georgia College a 5-3 advantage.

The Bulldogs got a run in the bottom of the seventh. Singles from McLaurin and Floyd, along with a Wells RBI single put runners on second and third with two outs in a 5-4 game, but the 'Dogs were unable to plate the tying run.

Flanders got the win in game two, moving to 4-2. She allowed three runs on eight hits in five innings, striking out four and walking two. Brooke Taylor got the save, allowing a run on four hits in two innings of work. Sophomore right-hander Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 4-5. She allowed five runs on nine hits in seven innings, striking out six without walking a batter.

Wingate is back in action Thursday, hosting a doubleheader against Lees-McRae at 1 p.m.
