Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore catcher
Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) had a grand slam and seven RBI Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep in South Atlantic Conference softball action. Wingate won both games in five innings, taking game one 16-0 while prevailing 8-0 in game two to improve to 21-15 overall and 8-2 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 2-16 overall and 0-10 in league play.
Game One: Wingate 16, Brevard 0 (5 innings)

Wingate jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Coyne plated the first two runs with a two-run double off the wall in right center. Back-to-back singles loaded the bases for Wells, who connected on her third homer of the year, a grand slam to left to make it 6-0.
The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the second, with the first run scoring on a Brevard error. A Wells RBI single made it 8-0. A Sapp RBI single and Hannah sacrifice fly put the 'Dogs on top by 10 in the third inning.
Wingate piled up six more runs in the fourth. Swenson's RBI single plated freshman
Jordan McDuffie (Asheboro, N.C.) to start the scoring, while a wild pitch made it 12-0. Martucci's RBI double to left center plated Swenson, while a VonCannon double plated Martucci to make it 14-0. A Hannah sacrifice fly and a wild pitch plated two more runs, making the final margin 16-0.
Weidner was dominant, tying a career high with 11 strikeouts, allowing just one single while walking three to move to 11-7 on the year, notching her sixth shutout of the season and 14th complete game.
Ricki Kuhn took the loss, allowing 10 runs on nine hits in three innings of work.
Game Two: Wingate 8 Brevard 0 (5 innings)
Wells and senior
Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) each had two hits and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense in game two, while Sapp was three-for-three with an RBI and two runs scored. Swenson added a homer for the Bulldogs, while Coyne had two hits and a run scored.
Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the first when Sapp led off the inning with a single, stole second, then scored on an error.
The Bulldogs scored five times in the third to go on top 6-0. Swenson started it by connecting on her third homer of the year, a solo shot to left. A Sapp RBI single made it 3-0, while a wild pitch put the 'Dogs on top by four. McLaurin added an RBI double, then scored on a Wells RBI single to make it 6-0.
Wingate scored twice in the fifth to end it. McLaurin plated Coyne with an RBI single, while Wells ended things by driving in her seventh run of the day with an RBI single to left, making the final margin 8-0.
Freshman right-hander
Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) got the win, moving to 10-8 on the year. She allowed just one hit in five innings, striking out seven and walking one. Kuhn took the loss, falling to 2-15. She allowed eight runs on 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Coker for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
