Wingate celebrates Senior Day with 17-5 SAC victory over Brevard

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior attack Brittany Andrews (Bel Air, Md.) led all scorers with eight points (five goals, three assists) as the Bulldogs celebrated Senior Day with a 17-5 South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse victory over Brevard from Graham Gill Field at the Irwin Belk Track Complex Saturday. Six players scored and seven student-athletes dished out an assist for the host Bulldogs.

Wingate is 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs visit number eight Queens University of Charlotte Wednesday at 4 p.m. Brevard is 3-11 overall and 0-8 in the SAC. The BC Tornados visit Lees-McRae Wednesday for a non-league tilt at the same time.

"Our team did a great job of executing our game plan today," Wingate head coach Caline McHenry Olmsted says. "It was a special day to honor our five senior student-athletes. I was proud we were able to play hard and get contributions from a lot of different players on both sides of the ball."

Wingate never trailed, bolting to a 3-0 lead six minutes into the first frame, thanks to two goals by redshirt junior attack Shannon O'Neal (Severna Park, Md.) and one score by Andrews. Brevard junior attack Nina Siu (Greensboro, N.C.) sandwiched her team-best two goals around an O'Neal score to make the score 5-3 Wingate at the 12:29 mark.

The Tornados would get no closer as the Bulldogs put together an 8-0 run (spanning both halves) to take a 13-3 lead on back-to-back goals by freshman midfielder Casey Roux (Rochester, N.Y.) with 20:58 to go in the contest. O'Neal did the heavy lifting in the first half, scoring all four of her goals in the opening frame. Wingate led 10-3 at intermission.

Wingate dominated the team statistical categories. The Bulldogs outshot their guests 42-10, including 25-6 in the first half. Wingate had three more ground balls (20-17) and six more draw controls (15-9) than Brevard. The Bulldogs converted three free-position shots in eight attempts, while the Tornados were unsuccessful in their only free-position try.

Bulldog sophomore goalie Arion Pierre (Haymarket, Va.) won her 11th game of the season. In 60 minutes, she allowed five goals and posted three saves. Brevard junior goalie Shelby Arsenault (Shallow Lake, Ontario) also went the distance Saturday. She surrendered 17 goals and recorded 15 saves.
