Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore infielder
Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) capped a doubleheader sweep with a walk-off RBI single in the eighth inning of game two, giving the Bulldogs the 7-6 extra-inning win over visiting Tusculum College. Wingate won the opener 11-7 over the Pioneers, improving to 19-29 overall and 10-14 in the SAC. Tusculum falls to 27-17 overall and 14-10 in league play.
Game One: Wingate 11, Tusculum 7
The Bulldogs piled up 17 hits, with freshman outfielder
Joseph Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) leading the way, going four-for-five with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore outfielder
Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) was three-for-five with three RBI and a run scored, while senior infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) added three hits including a homer, scoring two runs. Junior
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) contributed two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while Little added a hit and a pair of RBI.
Bradley Evans had a homer and three RBI to lead the Tusculum offense, while
Jeremy Glore added three hits and three RBI for the Pioneers.
Wingate took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with junior outfielder
Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) starting the frame with a single, then scoring on Brown's sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the second when Mason connected on his eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left.
Zack Finchum scored on Glore's RBI single in the top of the third to get Tusculum on the board.
The Bulldogs had the emphatic response, scoring five runs in the fifth to push the lead to seven. Brown's RBI double started the scoring, while RBI singles from Mason and Turgeon made it 6-1. Little capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run single to push the lead to seven.
Tusculum cut the lead to four in the sixth when Evans connected on a three-run shot to make it 8-4. Glore's RBI double in the seventh got the Pioneers within three.
The Bulldogs added some insurance in the eighth, starting with Barnette's solo homer to left, his fifth of the year to make it 9-5. Turgeon's two-run double to deep center put the 'Dogs back on top by six. Tusculum scored twice in the ninth, getting a Glore RBI single and
Nick Lacina RBI double to make the final margin 11-7.
Junior right-hander
Hunter Morgan (Summerfield, N.C.) got the win, moving to 6-4. He allowed four earned runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two. Senior right-hander
Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) worked the final 2 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run, striking out three to earn his third save of the season.
Tim Hardy took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits in four innings, falling to 8-3 on the season.
Game Two: Wingate 7, Tusculum 6 (8 innings)
Andrus was two-for-five with three RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game two, while Barnette added three more hits including a homer, scoring two runs. Turgeon collected a double, RBI and run scored, while Mason and Little also drove in a run for the Bulldogs.
John Topoleski was four-for-five with three RBI to lead the Tusculum offense.
John Bennett homered for the Pioneers, while
Daulton Martin added two hits and an RBI. Evans also drove in a run, while
Dante Key collected three hits and a run scored.
Martin's RBI single in the top of the first gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Wingate answered with two runs in the second, taking a 2-1 advantage on a two-run single from Andrus.
The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the third, starting with Barnette connecting on his second Senior Day homer to make it 3-1. Turgeon added an RBI double later in the frame to give the 'Dogs a three-run lead.
Tusculum scored three runs in the sixth to tie it. Evans plated the first run with a sacrifice fly, while Topoleski's two-run single made it 4-4. Bennett led off the top of the seventh with a solo homer to give the Pioneers a 5-4 lead.
Wingate answered in the bottom of the frame. Barnette and Brown started the innings with singles, while a sacrifice moved them to second and third. Mason's sacrifice fly plated Barnette to make it 5-5, sending the game to extra innings.
Seth DeHaven led off the top of the eighth with a single, then scored on Topoleski's RBI single to give Tusculum a 6-5 advantage.
Wingate again had the answer in the bottom of the inning. Turgeon drew a lead-off walk, while junior infielder
Brett Branton (Athens, Ga.) beat out a bunt single to put two on with no outs.
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice, while an RBI groundout from Andrus plated Turgeon to tie the game. Little then came to the plate and lined a 2-2 pitch through the middle, driving home Branton to give the 'Dogs the sweep.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander
Jimmy Doolittle (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-2. He allowed a run on two hits in one innings of work, striking out one.
McKenly Berry took the loss, falling to 1-2. He allowed three runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking one.
Wingate will be the eight seed in next week's SAC Tournament, which begins Thursday, April 27 in Kodak, Tenn.
