Newberry, S.C.----The Newberry College Wolves closed the game on a 12-4 run Wednesday night, holding off visiting Wingate University 78-73 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Wolves improve to 11-9 overall and 5-7 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 10-10 overall and 7-5 in league play. The contest was the third road game in five days for Wingate, who picked up SAC road victories Saturday and Monday.
Rob Valentine knocked down six threes to lead the Wolves with 19 points. James Stepp had 15 points and six rebounds, while Marshall Lange collected 13 points, five assists and four rebounds for the Wolves.
Junior guard
Marco Haskins (Fredericksburg, Va.) notched his second 20-point game in three days, leading the 'Dogs with 20 points on seven-of-12 shooting, adding six rebounds and three assists. Senior guard
Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) added 14 points, while junior guard
Emarius Logan (Columbia, S.C.) had 13 points on five-of-seven shooting. Graduate student
Kerigan Farley (Hickory, N.C.) contributed 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Bulldogs.
A Logan jumper and Haskins three gave the Bulldogs a 12-7 lead eight minutes into the first half, but a Lange triple tied it a minute later.
Luke Gibson knocked down a three to give Newberry a 17-14 advantage, but Logan's three-point play tied it at the 5:58 mark. Logan's three put Wingate on top with 2:22 left in the half, but threes from
Nick Dietrich and
Max Miller helped the Wolves take a 33-28 halftime lead.
Stepp's three gave Newberry a seven-point advantage four minutes into the second half, but a Haskins triple a minute later got the 'Dogs within five. Lange's three put the Wolves on top 53-45 at the 10:50 mark, but Lolar's jumper a minute later cut the lead in half. Haskins drained a triple at the 7:51 mark to make it a one-point game.
Wingate used a 5-0 run to take a 59-56 lead, getting a Farley bucket and Haskins three-point play go on top with six minutes remaining. Logan's three at the 3:30 mark put the Bulldogs ahead 65-61, but a pair of Valentine threes tied it with 1:56 left. Valentine buried another triple with a minute remaining to put Newberry on top by three, while a pair of free throws from
Jamaal Satisfield made it 74-69 with 20 seconds left. Farley had a pair of buckets down the stretch, but Newberry countered by going four-for-four at the free throw line to hold off the Wingate rally.
Newberry shot 41 percent from the field, hitting 16-of-44 shots from three-point range (36 percent). The Bulldogs shot 43 percent from the field, connecting on eight-of-24 shots from beyond the arc (33 percent). Each team collected 37 rebounds, with Newberry holding a 10-8 edge in second-chance points. Wingate outscored the Wolves 38-14 in the paint, while each team committed 10 turnovers.
The Bulldogs are back in action next Wednesday, returning home to host Catawba at 8 p.m.
