Charlotte, N.C.----The second-ranked Queens University Royals remained perfect on the season, prevailing 74-58 over visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action Wednesday night. The Royals improve to 14-0 overall and 6-0 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 7-7 on the year and 4-2 in league play.
Jalin Alexander led four Royals in double figures with 15 points, adding five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Ike Agusi and
Mike Davis contributed 12 points apiece, while
Todd Withers added 11 points.
Graduate student point guard
Kerigan Farley (Hickory, N.C.) had 14 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists to lead the Wingate attack. Senior forward
Devarious Christian (Charlotte, N.C.) added 10 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard
Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) and junior guard
Marco Haskins (Fredericksburg, Va.) also had 10 points each.
A pair of free throws from
Emarius Logan (Columbia, S.C.) gave Wingate an early 10-9 lead, but a Withers jumper capped an 8-0 run that put the Royals on top 17-10 with 6:53 remaining in the first half. A Farley layup got the Bulldogs within five, but a
Daniel Carr bucket at the 2:55 mark extended the Queens lead to nine. A
Neico Robinson (Easley, S.C.) dunk and Farley jumper got the 'Dogs back within five, but an Alexander jumper with 30 seconds left gave Queens a 30-21 halftime advantage.
Robinson's bucket early in the second half got Wingate within seven, but a Davis triple gave the Royals a 47-35 lead with 15 minutes to go. Alexander's bucket at the 11:22 mark pushed the lead to 15, while
Darryl White made it 63-41 with a bucket with 7:36 to go.
Wingate countered with a 10-0 run to get back within 12. Lolar started the run with a layup and three, while Farley's three-point play capped the spurt. Christian's layup at the 3:15 mark got the 'Dogs within 11, but Wingate did not score another bucket the rest of the way, with an Agusi layup in the final seconds giving the Royals the 16-point advantage.
Queens shot 50 percent from the field on the night, hitting five-of-16 shots from three-point range (31.3 percent). Wingate shot 40 percent from the field, knocking down five-of-15 shots from beyond the arc (33.3 percent). The Royals held a 33-32 rebounding advantage, outscoring Wingate 42-20 in the paint. The Royals converted 19 Bulldog turnovers into 24 points, holding a 12-2 edge in fast-break points.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Anderson for a 4 p.m. start.
