Clemson earns 80-48 exhibition victory over #21 Wingate

Clemson, S.C.----Clemson University freshman forward Taylor Hosendove had 14 points to lead four players in double figures as the Tigers earned an 80-48 women's basketball exhibition victory over Wingate University Friday in Littlejohn Coliseum (NCAA box score; play-by-play). Wingate sophomore forward Teliyah Jeter (Greenville, S.C.) had 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the NCAA Division II number 21 Bulldogs.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
 
-Clemson outscored Wingate 48-18 in the paint and 30-8 on points off turnovers.
-The Bulldogs hung tough on the boards with 39 rebounds (17 offensive). The Tigers pulled down 41 caroms.
-Jeter had seven offensive rebounds. Clemson's leading rebounder had seven total boards.
-Jeter was the only Bulldog to score double-digit points. Eleven of the 13 participating Wingate players found the scoring column.
-For Clemson, graduate student guard Simone Westbrook had 11 points, while senior guard Danielle Edwards and junior center Kobi Thornton had 10 points each.
-Both teams had three players hit one three-point field goal each.
-Wingate had 25 bench points (compared to 36 for Clemson) with Jeter's 10 markers leading the way.
-Clemson shot 50 percent from the floor (31-of-62), while Wingate managed only 30.2 percent accuracy (16-of-53).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Quarter
 
Wingate senior guard Courtney Robinson (Taylors, S.C.) gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead on a traditional three-point play with 6:13 remaining. Thornton answered with two free throws on the other end to give the Tigers the lead for good. Bulldog freshman guard Jo Snow (Mount Airy, N.C.) hit a three-pointer to pull the visitors within one (9-8) at the 4:34 mark. Clemson led 18-10 at the end of the frame, holding a 12-2 advantage with points in the paint.
 
Second quarter
 
A Collier triple opened the second stanza scoring (9:49) to give the Tigers their first double-digit lead at 21-10. A Hosendove three-pointer made the score 35-16 Clemson five minutes later. The Tigers hit 10-of-15 field goals in the second quarter for a sizzling 66.7 percent. Clemson led 42-22 at intermission.
 
Third quarter
 
Clemson made six-of-18 field goals (33.3 percent) in the third frame, while Wingate hit only four-of-13 (30.8 percent). The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 18-13 in the third quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter
 
Wingate started the fourth quarter with three freshmen, one junior and one senor on the court. The Tigers shot 64.3 percent from the field in the final 10 minutes (nine-of-14). On the other end, the Bulldogs hit a game-low 27.3 of their field goal attempts (three-of-11).

Wingate head women's basketball coach Ann Hancock: "Playing Clemson was a great experience for us. We did some good things, but we also saw areas where we need to improve. Hopefully, we can make corrections quickly."
 
"Teliyah Jeter had a tremendous effort on both ends of the floor. Her offensive rebounding was crucial. Our freshman also got some experience against tough competition."

Wingate opens the 2018-19 season next weekend in Morrow, Ga. at the PBC-SAC Challenge. The Bulldogs face Georgia College Friday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m., while taking on host Clayton State Saturday at 4 p.m. Wingate's first home game is slated for Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. against Francis Marion.
