Bulldogs stymie #11 Eagles in 67-58 victory

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs held the 11th-ranked Carson-Newman University Eagles to their lowest shooting percentage in 76 games Saturday afternoon, prevailing 67-58 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate wins its fifth straight, improving to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Eagles fall to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the SAC.

KEY STATS

- Wingate shot 34.3 percent from the field on the afternoon, holding Carson-Newman to 25.8 percent
- The Bulldogs held a 55-44 rebounding advantage and 22-12 edge in second-chance points
- WU outscored CN 32-20 in the paint
- Wingate shot 33.3 percent from three-point range (4-12) while Carson-Newman shot 21.4 percent (3-14)

SECOND QUARTER

- A bucket from Sydney Pearce got the Eagles within nine at the 8:04 mark
- A layups from Robinson and Elana Ingram gave the 'Dogs their largest lead of 17 at the 3:54 mark
- Two made free throws from Kayla Marosites cut the lead to seven going into half time Wingate up 35-28

THIRD QUARTER

- Threes from Marosites and Tori Griffin cut the Bulldogs lead to four at the 3:49 mark
- A Quick layup gave the 'Dogs a four-point edge at the end of the quarter

FOURTH QUARTER

- A Taylor Helms three started the scoring in the final frame
- The Eagles would score the next eight unanswered to tie it at 50 with 5:50 remaining
- Wingate then went on a 9-0 run getting field goals from Jeter and Averette in the flurry
- Two made free throws from Averette would cap off the scoring at 67-58
